MG is arguably the most famous of all sportscar marques. The MGA stemmed from an aerodynamically efficient sportscar first seen in the 1951 Le Mans 24 Hours that eventually went into production at the MG Abingdon works in 1955. Powered by the 1489cc BMC B-series engine, and fitted with twin SU carburettors, which resulted in a 72bhp power output, the new MGA became an instant hit with the sportscar buying public thanks to highly competitive performance and handling. Indeed, such was the new model’s impact in the MG dealer showrooms that over 13, 000 were purchased in the first year of production - and, by the time the final A came off the Abingdon line in mid-1962, 101, 081 had been manufactured. A closed fixed head coupe, such as the car offered here today, joined the open roadster in the MG catalogue from 1956 onwards.
