Chesil Speedster in the "Outlaw" style which has been completely built and occasionally modified over the last 35 years or so. Mainly built in the days before Internet and online suppliers many parts have been fabricated or machined by current and only owner / builder .
Registered as a Historic Vehicle with DVLA it predates both SVA and later IVA requirements and as such is both road tax and MOT exempt. The current registration number is non transferable so stays with the car . Total mileage is under 3500 miles .
Based on a 1954 VW Beetle chassis (originally a beach buggy ) with uprated and lowered suspension . Disc brake conversion . Static stance with drop spindles up front and 2 spline drop at the rear . Fitted with either 5" x15" 5 x 205 pcd black powdercoated Speedwell BRM alloy wheels with staggered tyre combo of 145/ 65/ 15 & 195/ 65/ 15 or 7" x 17" Fully polished 5 x 130 pcd Fuchs alloy wheel fitted with 205/ 45/ 17 tyres all round . Both sets of wheels are included in sale . The brake conversion and Fuchs wheels and tyres being fitted approx 100 miles ago. The BRM wheels tyres have approx 2000 miles . All are like new.
The Chesil Speedster replica body is in fact highly polished fibreglass gel coat ( its never been painted ) with graphics reminiscent of a 1950's racer. The graphics extend under the bumpers both front and rear so car can run bumperless if desired . Fitted with chrome headlight grills , Notek auxiliary lights ( non functional), engine cover grill badges . Mohair low bow soft top and wind up windows for convenience. Removable A pillars for original look when windows wound down . Steve Bowles supplied full leather interior with correct slot back seats , lap seat belts ( also 4 point harnesses) and German square weave carpets . Also fitted with many period features and accessories incl Banjo steering wheel , rally stopwatch timers , Vintage Speed shifter with custom made shift knob , roller accelerator pedal , period Blaupunkt radio ( working but not connected ) , custom painted open face helmet , under dash fire extinguisher and electric fan heater with usb connectivity. The dash has also been signed by Porsche Le Mans driver Derek Bell who was in the car at one of the TIPEC shows. (See photo)
Under bonnet details include square weave carpeting , Le Mans style alloy fuel filler , space saver spare wheel with jack and wheelbrace , full toolkit and period " in wheel" 6L fuel container .
The fully rebuilt engine is a mildly tuned and modified 1600cc twin port aircooled flat 4 with full flow oil system and remote spin on oil filter situated in N/ S rear wheel well. Twin Dellorto 36 DRLA carburettors with red anodized open bellmouths. Electronic ignition system with Accuspark 009 distributor , coil and silicone ignition leads . Original Fram oil filter cannister has been modified and now contains the inline fuel filter. Full aeroquip style braided fuel lines and unions and CSP Supercomp full flow stainless steel exhaust system with stainless steel heat exchangers and larger tailpipes .
Despite its relatively low horsepower compared to modern day vehicles , it's totally reliable and a very spritely car weighing under 800kg . With its lowered supension it sticks to the road like glue . Perfect for twisting country roads and long distance touring alike. The car comes with 2 keys and a large history file including manuals , brochures and magazine articles.
The Bodywork has just been fully detailed with a 2 stage correction and polish with addition of ceramic coating.
