Description
This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The March Timed Online Auction on Thursday the 27th of March, Online. Background:
The Wolf (with the wheel on the left side) is based on the Defender 90 and 110. It was introduced in 1994, but after two years of testing, rejection, upgrades and further testing, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) was finally satisfied. As a result, the Wolf is much stronger and more reliable than the standard Defender. The Wolf’s mechanical upgrades are extensive, but to summarise, it features a 113bhp, 300TDi engine with no electronics, except for the fuel pump solenoid. It also includes a rust-proofed chassis, a gearbox cooling system, reinforced front bulkhead, rails and sills, a reinforced Salisbury rear axle and an upgraded front axle with stronger differentials.
The exact number of Ministry of Defence Wolf Defenders that were scrapped due to combat damage or sold to foreign armies and NGOs is unknown, however most of the open-topped 'canvas tilt' Defenders rarely survived military service and Royal Navy vehicles often suffered due to their exposure to the sea. The hardtop version of the Wolf was much more suited to British weather and was far more common than the canvas-backed variant, which was mostly in left-hand drive for overseas use.
The Car:
This particular vehicle was directly purchased from the MOD in 2023 and will come with a certificate of service. Like all MOD Land Rovers, the odometer is in kilometres, with the current reading at 213, 000km (c. 130, 000 miles) however the vehicle had a new engine fitted in 2017 by the MOD, so it’s ready for many more miles. The car also has an MOT valid until 4th November 2025.
This example of the Wolf 90 is equipped with a Remus upgrade and several heavy-duty factory extras. These include an extra front roll hoop, an interior roll cage, acoustic matting, rear bench seats with seatbelts and chassis wax protection. Powered by a 2, 495cc four-cylinder turbo diesel engine producing 111bhp, it is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission with low range and four-wheel drive. The vehicle is also fitted with the correct Goodyear G90 tires, which have been used in military vehicles for over 20 years and are designed for extreme off-road conditions.
This Land Rover 90 Wolf is perfect whether you're navigating rocky mountain trails, crossing muddy bogs, or simply seeking a vehicle that can handle whatever you throw at it.
