The superb E30 series of BMW compact saloons and coupes ran from 1982 until 1994. Offering a combination of high performance, exquisite style, and full four-seater convenience, the BMW E30 was an instant success and, to many enthusiasts, were the last of the real driver-focused models from BMW and have as such been recognised as a true modern classic. Baur, coachbuilder of Stuttgart, Germany, which was established in 1910, producing not only a huge number of BMW Cabriolets that they are famous for, but notably several vehicles that are today seen as extremely historically important, such as all Porsche 959s. Beginning production of the "Targa-style" body with the BMW 2002, originally as an aftermarket option available through BMW dealers, the E21 3 Series TC1 was built with full factory authorisation. The roll-bar version or "Top Cabrio" (TC) continued with the E30 TC2, even though it was Baur who developed the BMW E30 Convertible design for BMW. The cost of a Baur conversion was extremely expensive at the time (£3, 795. 00 at 1987 prices), so genuine Baurs are a rarity and carry an identification plate from the factory, located on the left side door shut. A total of just 1, 806 Baur Cabriolets were supplied to the United Kingdom.
Chassis ‘38598’ was manufactured in 1989 and was supplied new by Derek Woodman Ltd, The BMW Centre of Blackpool, being first registered on the 1st of November that year. Finished from the factory in Alpine White paintwork with an Indigo cloth interior and a Blue power hood, the BMW has been used sparingly throughout its life. Supplied new to the first lady owner, the Baur was retained by her until her passing in 2002, when ownership of ‘G104 HFV’ was taken on by her sister. Remaining stored in a heated garage during the second sister’s ownership, the Baur had covered some 26, 000 miles by this time. Returning to the road in its third ownership, that of a BMW enthusiast, the 320i is now the property of a Titled Gentleman. Highly original and unmolested, the Baur is believed to retain its original factory paintwork and interior upholstery, as well as being accompanied by the original tool kit, first aid kit, warning triangle, and glovebox torch!
Not only highly original but also very well maintained during its life, the BMW boasts a stamped service book that illustrates twenty stamps, with most of those being completed by supplying dealer Derek Woodman. Moreover, there are additional services documented in the comprehensive accompanying history file, which also includes the original book pack with the Baur-specific operations manual, original sales literature, numerous invoices, previous MOT certificates, E30 Baur information, ownership history, and a current V5C document. Benefitting from a new timing belt, water pump, fan belt, and power steering belt in 2023 with Hind Heath Ltd BMW specialists (c.£800), the Baur also benefitted from a renewed transmission wiring harness and transmission service in 2024 by automatic specialist Autolock costing some £950. Examples of the now iconic E30 with this originality and mileage are few and far between, and this example with the added rarity and exclusivity of being a Baur Cabriolet surely ticks many boxes for a BMW aficionado.
