Designated “E9” by BMW, the replacement for the 2000 CS arrived in 1968. Aptly badged the 2800 CS, it featured a lengthened chassis and wheelbase to accommodate a new 160-horsepower 2. 8-litre straight-six engine.
By 1971, further developments had been made, and the 3. 0 CS and 3. 0 CSi were launched. The former produced 180 PS, while the fuel-injected latter was rated at an impressive 200 PS. Either variant could be specified with a three-speed automatic gearbox or, the collectors’ favourite, a four-speed manual.
This 3. 0 CSi left the factory on 2 December 1975 one of last 55 E9 produced, finished in Polaris Silver over a Marinebla interior, and was fitted with the five-speed manual gearbox. It was delivered new on 11 December via BMW AT, where it remained until 2022, it recorded about four owners, the last one kept it since 1984 and in 2015 it had undertaken the restoration without ever completing it. The car in question underwent a complete water sandblasting and integral sheet metal, replacing many parts (weak point of the preserved E9s) and was repainted in its first original colour Polaris Silver 060 . All the steel parts have been polished while the iron parts have been re-chromed, the interior its original interior has been preserved in almost excellent condition, with the typical specifications of end-of-series models, all the wooden parts have been restored, as well as its completely overhauled electrical system. All the mechanical part has been overhauled like new to ensure perfect efficiency, Its 3003 cc engine has retained its original pistons (without wear and of superior quality) but has undergone a total overhaul of all the mechanical parts such as rods, segments, housings, chain, oil pump, bushings, even the cylinder head has been completely overhauled by changing seats and valves, obviously all the gaskets are new in order to guarantee perfect sealing. Much attention has been paid to the D-jetronic injection system, installing only new parts: fuel pump with accumulator, pressure regulator (to ensure a constant pressure of 2. 2 Bar) and also a kit of six new generation injectors that guarantee a constant flow. Both the front and rear axles have been overhauled by changing the shock absorber bushings and bearings of the differential which in this car is self-locking, the entire braking system has been overhauled by opening the brake pads, changing the cylinders, gaskets and pipes, logically both the brake pump and clutch pump and the brake servo itself (upgraded version only for the mod. 75) have been overhauled.
Second only to the celebrated 3. 0 CSL in terms of power and exclusivity, the 3. 0 CSi is one of the most collectible variants of E9. This example, with its attractive colour scheme and manual gearbox, is doubly desirable, very interesting are the options installed in this car such as the completely overhauled Getrag 262 gearbox capable of ensuring a relaxing rotation regime in fifth gear during motorway journeys and the original air conditioning has been completely overhauled by equipping it with a new rotary compressor, filters and pipes capable of recording a temperature lower than 8 degrees Celsius at the outlet of the vent.
Like all our cars, the entire restoration process is documented by an invoice and a photographic book that documents all the processing steps.
The car is accompanied by the Birth Certificate from BMW Classic which confirms the colour combinations, serial numbers and dispatch date, its complete toolkit, its fail history from new and our photo book with every moment of the restoration with over 400 photos. The car also has the ASI historical relevance certification and a fresh Italian registration.
