Description

The 1955 Jaguar XK140 SE Roadster is a highly regarded classic British sports car that built upon the success of its predecessor, the Jaguar XK120. It was introduced in late 1954 as an evolution of the XK120, offering improvements in performance, comfort, and handling while maintaining the sleek and elegant styling that made the XK series famous.

The Story Behind the XK140
By the early 1950s, Jaguar had firmly established itself as a dominant force in both luxury and performance motoring. The XK120, introduced in 1948, had been a revelation—one of the fastest production cars of its time, with a top speed of 120 mph (hence its name). However, Jaguar sought to refine and enhance the XK120’s formula, leading to the birth of the XK140 in 1954.

The XK140 retained the legendary 3. 4-liter XK inline-six engine, but with increased horsepower. The Special Equipment (SE) model, also known as the MC model in the U. S., featured a high-performance C-Type cylinder head, boosting power output to 210 hp (compared to 190 hp in the standard version). This upgrade made the XK140 SE even more desirable, particularly for enthusiasts and racers.

Key Features and Improvements
Increased Performance: The 3. 4L straight-six engine delivered more power, especially in the SE variant with the C-Type head.
Enhanced Comfort: Unlike the XK120, the XK140 was designed with more interior space, thanks to moving the engine and firewall forward by 3 inches.
Rack-and-Pinion Steering: A significant upgrade over the XK120’s recirculating ball system, improving handling precision.
Better Ride Quality: Improved suspension and telescopic shock absorbers replaced the old lever-arm shocks.
Bumpers and Aesthetics: The XK140 featured more substantial front and rear bumpers, with an integrated Jaguar badge on the grille.
Roadster Configuration (OTS - Open Two Seater): The XK140 SE Roadster featured a lightweight aluminum body with removable side screens, making it the purest driver-focused model in the lineup.
Racing Heritage and Legacy
Jaguar had already cemented its motorsport reputation with multiple Le Mans victories in 1951 and 1953 using the C-Type race car. The XK140 SE shared key engine components with the C-Type, making it a favorite among sports car enthusiasts and private racers. Though Jaguar’s factory racing efforts were focused on the more advanced D-Type, the XK140 SE was still a formidable machine on the track.

The XK140 SE Today
