NOTE MERCEDES-BENZ 220 S CABRIOLET 1958
The 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220 S Cabriolet is one of the finest examples of elegance and sophistication of its era, perfectly embodying the luxury and charm of the 1950s "dolce vita." Produced between 1956 and 1959, the 220 S Cabriolet was part of the W180 series, renowned for its advanced engineering and superior comfort.
Powered by a 2. 2-liter inline-six engine with dual Solex carburetors, it produced 106 hp, ensuring a smooth driving experience with performance befitting such a prestigious automobile. It featured a four-speed manual gearbox with synchronized gears and a monocoque chassis with independent suspension for exceptional handling.
This particular example was manufactured in 1958 and sold new by the official Mercedes-Benz importer in Switzerland, with delivery in Zurich. It was registered in July of the same year under the name of Ing. Ballabio in the Canton of Ticino. Over the years, it received regular maintenance at the Mercedes-Benz Bescagni and Ferrari dealership in Lugano and, by 1968, after a decade, had only covered 17, 200 km.
Imported to Italy in 1984 and registered in Padua, it still retains its original Italian registration plates.
Over the next twenty years, it changed hands among some collectors, including a member of the International Mercedes-Benz Registry, who registered it in the Italian section and obtained official badge no. 695, still displayed on the front grille.
In 2006, the car was acquired by its last owner, who meticulously preserved it for the next two decades.
During this period, it underwent a conservative restoration, receiving a repaint in its original colors and a new beige fabric soft top, made with factory-spec materials.
In 2009, it earned the prestigious ASI Targa Oro certification.
To this day, the car has only covered 82, 000 km, a testament to the exceptional condition of its fully original red leather interior, as well as the wooden dashboard and door trims, all impeccably preserved.
It comes with all original user manuals, service books, and parts catalogues. The original Becker Mexico radio remains installed, complete with its user manual and factory warranty.
A unique feature is the original Swiss Touring Club envelope, containing regulations, benefits, fuel cards, and the club’s statute, along with its badge on the front grille—all in perfect condition. This outstanding documentation adds significant historical and collectible value to the car.
A detailed file containing extensive historical information is also included.
A windshield sticker indicates a probable journey to Barcelona in April 1970 for the 5th Formula 2 Grand Prix, evoking images of this elegant Cabriolet cruising along the French Riviera under the spring sun.
With matching chassis, body, and engine numbers, its pristine condition, stunning bronze and gold two-tone paintwork with burgundy leather interior, ASI certification, extensive documentation, and impeccable mechanics, this vehicle is a rare find for the most discerning collectors who appreciate both historical authenticity and automotive excellence.
