The GranSport version of the 4200 Coupe was launched in 2004 and the Spyder followed soon after. The styling changes by Frank Stephenson, then Maserati chief stylist, gave the Giugiaro design a much sharper, sportier look. The 4. 2 litre V8 underwent some detail improvement and a new exhaust with bypass valves raised the power output from 390bhp to 400bhp at 7000rpm, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 4. 9 seconds and a maximum speed of 180mph.
The Cambiocorsa 6-speed manual paddle shift transaxle also benefitted from improved software over the standard car with faster change speed in Sport mode. The double wishbone front and rear suspension used Maserati’s patent skyhook active damping technology and firmer, more track focused spring and roll bar settings.
GranSport specification also included new 19” wheels, a new interior including carbon centre console. 472 GranSport Coupes were sold new in the UK and 26 GranSport Spyders.
This car.
Supplied new on the 3rd of January 2007 by Maserati dealer Dick Lovett in Swindon, the first owner of this GranSport Spyder didn’t keep the car long, only covering 5, 600 miles, and by early 2009 it was being offered for sale by Meridien Modena, where it attracted the attention of the current owners, husband and wife and both enthusiastic Maserati Club members.
Initially the car was used for a lengthy commute from Berkshire to Wales and the mileage over the first couple of years of ownership was high, though it didn’t stop it also from attending some Club events. A perfect car for everyday and high days – everyday exceptional, as they say now…
It was however, serviced as required and has a full compliment of stamps in the book. As the need to commute subsided, the GranSport became more of a car for special occasions and has been much-loved in this ownership. It is now being offered for sale to make way for another Maserati – a particularly special GranCabrio but that’s another story.
The mileage today is 63, 705 miles and this remains a very original two-owner car in the unusual (for a GranSport Spyder) but appropriate Maserati red with black hide and red piping. It has a full service history with dealers and specialists, including some history with McGrath.
The car is available to view at our premises and will be sold with an appropriate service carried out and long MOT.
