The arrival in 1998 of the 3200GT was the dawn of the modern era for Maserati. With Fiat money, new production lines and volume ambition, this new Coupe set the world on fire. The sleek and modern lines were the work of long-time Maserati collaborator Giorgetto Giugiaro at Ital Design, and with a new 3. 2 litre quad-cam, twin-turbo V8 engine developing 370 bhp, the tre mille due became an overnight sensation.
Available in the UK from a newly formed dealer network and with substantial investment behind it, this was Maserati being serious. From the beginning the 3200 featured either a six-speed manual gearbox or new 4-speed auto and in fact around 70% were delivered here with auto out of around 800 examples. This was the first Maserati to feature fly-by-wire throttle but only the latest to offer a luxury interior as well as blistering pace. However, one of its most distinctive and unique features, and the one that would become it’s calling card (especially after one overtook you) were those boomerang rear lights.
A replacement for the 3200GT arrived in 2002 in the form of the 4200 Coupe with normally-aspirated engine. Visually similar, the driving experience could not be more different and as both models have matured, they have found equal numbers of devotees. Those that prefer the 3200 love the prodigious torque, the glorious noise and the traditional rear-wheel drive handling. But in true Maserati fashion, these are delivered in luxury and surrounded by a timeless and elegant design.
This car.
One of the rare manual gearbox cars, this 3200GT was sold new in the UK in June 2000 by Graypaul Loughborough to it’s first owner in Leicestershire. It was specified in Verde Brooklands with grey leather and green carpet and covered around 6, 000 per annum for the first few years, serviced by Graypaul. In 2005, it was they who then sold the car again to the second owner in Nottingham who was to keep it another five years before selling to the current owner in 2010. At that time, the mileage was 44, 800.
The current owner bought this car in early retirement and the world of Maserati became an enduring hobby for him. He joined the Maserati Club and became a familiar face at events and being from an engineering background, researched, discussed, fettled and generally enthused about the 3200. He was a great supporter of the model and learnt all of the potential foibles along the way, though making sure that he kept his own car out of trouble.
However, he wasn’t afraid to use it and it continued to average around 4, 000 miles a year until 2022, when sadly the owner became ill and the car was laid up. As much as he was able, he continued to look after it in his garage at home, but sadly it is now for sale on behalf of his estate.
Servicing and more in-depth maintenance work during his ownership has been carried out by us at McGrath including religious cam belt changes and while this car has now done 93, 000 miles, not surprisingly it presents and drives like one with half the mileage. It also has an obsessive history file. So if you think you could be a 3200 owner then this car is a very good place to start.
This 3200GT is available to view at our premises and will be sold with a new service (including cam belt replacement) and a long MOT.
