The Corolla G6R is a lesser known example of the originally ubiquitous eighth-generation E110 Corolla. Released in limited numbers to commemorate Toyota's 1999 Manufacturer's World Rally Championship, just 420 examples originally made it to the UK. ‘T949 OHE’ is one of these rare models with only 15 or so now thought to remain. ‘T949 OHE’ has had just four owners to date with the current owner acquiring it in October 2022. ‘T949 OHE’ has been brought up to standard by the current owners thanks to a thorough recommissioning. This work extended to bodywork, brakes and underside. A new clutch was fitted, required welding done and undersealing performed. A full service has recently been performed and a new battery fitted. ‘T949 OHE’ has a valid MOT until August 2025, comes with plenty of paperwork and service history and is being offered with no reserve.
Toyota proactively marketed the Corolla G6R as “not a hot hatch.” Their idea was to provide good value fun for younger drivers with lighter weight being prioritised over more power. As such the G6R featured an aluminium bonnet and special alloy wheels. Toyota claimed the GR6 “placed emphasis on affordable fun rather than insurance-prohibitive performance.” ‘T949 OHE’ still exhibits that innovative approach and looks great in its original black livery, subtle body kit and 15-inch six spoke Toyota alloy wheels. The G6R’s cabin was notable for its jazzy cloth upholstery, red seat belts and chunky perforated steering wheel. ‘T949 OHE’s’ cabin looks highly original even down to its Toyota branded Philips radio cassette player. The bodywork, paintwork and interior all attract an “average” rating.
The 1. 6 litre, DOHC, 16-valve four cylinder 4A-FE engine was originally rated at around 109 bhp and the G6R weighed in at just over a tonne. As such ‘T949 OHE’ and its siblings fulfilled the “fun through light weight and modest power” brief. A six speed manual transmission also endowed the car with legitimate motorway cruising credentials when needed. ‘T949 OHE’s’ mechanical systems are all rated as “good.”
In summary:
· A rare Toyota with just 15 or so thought to remain
· Nicely restored to present in a decent overall condition
· An unusual and eminently practical modern classic for JDM lovers
