The Ford Escort Mk2 RS2000 holds a significant place in automotive history as an iconic rally and performance car of its time. Introduced in the 1970s, it was the successor to the original Escort RS1600 and became known for its powerful 2. 0-liter engine, rear-wheel drive setup, and sporty design. The RS2000's presence on rally stages showcased its remarkable performance capabilities, cementing its reputation as a formidable contender. With its distinctive "droop snoot" front end and rear spoiler, the Mk2 RS2000 became a symbol of Ford's commitment to motorsport and enthusiasts alike. Its legacy endures as a symbol of the golden era of rallying and a beloved classic among car enthusiasts worldwide.
We are delighted to offer this Ford Escort RS2000 Custom in Venetian red with Chocolate interior. This delightful example was supplied by Perrys Ford of North Finchley to a Mr G Mason and registered on 23rd May 1980. It’s wonderful to see the original order form and sales receipt are present, confirming that this is a genuine Custom model. Since then the Escort has had only 3 further keepers and our vendor has been custodian for the last 10 years. The odometer records 65, 560 miles, the vendor adding only the last 2000 of that. In his tenure, he has had the engine rebuilt due to the original head failing. It was machined at Roland L Alsop and the opportunity was taken to unleash a bit more power with the following specification:-
Rebore block +0. 5mm, skim block
Crank regrind +010”
New pistons and rings 0. 5mm, Machine top ring gaps
Complete bottom end balance
ARP Bolts
Brand new Burton Stage 3 Unleaded head
Kent FR32 Camshaft
Aldon distributor and mappable ignition system
New heavy duty clutch, new battery and 4 new tyres
Twin 45’s DCOE’s were recommended and fitted.
Since the engine rebuild the car has done less than 1000 miles. The engine was rolling road tuned to provide a driveable car with plenty of torque. The car comes with dyno sheets showing that power was increased from just over 100 to just over 145bhp @ 6000rpm. We have driven the car at a leisurely pace for our video and can certainly confirm it feels eager to go and sounds fantastic.
The car presents well in its vibrant red paint with black detailing. It sits on the correct RS alloys which are shod with matching Yokohama tyres. Inside, the car is very original. The dash is free from cracks and is complete with the correct Custom glovebox cover. The seats are covered in their original chocolate brown velour and have the fishnet headrest inserts.
The vendor has also supplied a box of spare parts containing the following:-
Timing belt
Fan belts
Nearly new spare 32/ 36 DGAV carburettor and original airbox
Various engine gaskets
New brake pads
Iconic is arguably an overused term in the classic car world but the admiration for the RS2000 goes way beyond the Fast Ford community – an RS2000 always draws a crowd in any company. This fabulous example looks right inside and out but has that welcome extra urge from the engine upgrade. The best of all worlds?
