It was the successor to the Bristol 408 and the first model to introduce significant modifications to improve driveability and comfort, anticipating the developments that characterised the marque's later models. In the 1960s, Bristol was a niche brand specialising in high-performance luxury cars, often purchased by a select clientele. The 409 represented stylistic continuity, but with important technical updates. One of the most innovative aspects was the introduction of power steering, which improved handling, making the car more agile than previous models. This was a step forward compared to the 408, which, despite its modern styling, was heavier to drive.
