Description
Born in 1966, the last work of Battista Pininfarina, the Alfa Romeo Spider marked thirty years of automotive history, becoming the first ambassador of Italian design in the world, and then the dynamic, brilliant, and timeless icon of Italian automobiles.
Known worldwide, and not just by car enthusiasts, the Alfa Romeo Spider is the last car designed in 1966 by Battista Pininfarina: a low and fast spider, with a cuttlebone profile, rounded front and rear, a long groove on its wing, a lowered grille, and a two-part front bumper interrupted to highlight the Alfa Romeo badge.
The first version features the 1570 cc twin-cam engine with two double-barrel 40 carburetors from the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce, developing 110 HP. The mechanical layout changes, inheriting the same 2, 250 mm wheelbase from the Giulietta/ Giulia Spider it’s about to replace: longitudinal front engine, five-speed gearbox, rear-wheel drive, independent front suspension, rigid axle on the rear, and disc brakes on all four wheels.
Many curious episodes have marked the history of this icon of Italian automobiles. To begin with, its nickname “Duetto”, resulting from a public contest but claimed by a confectionery company that forced Alfa to abandon it just a year after its presentation, though it remained the most used and famous name to define it. Another memorable event was the sumptuous cruise – Genoa, Cannes, New York – on the hydrofoil Raffaello, with which the European jet set accompanied three Spiders – white, red, and green – that landed in America for the official U. S. presentation. In 1967, the car became world-famous as it was driven by Dustin Hoffman in the film “The Graduate”, and “Graduate” (the original English title of the film) became the name of an equipment package.
Alongside the 1600, there was first the 1750 Veloce and then the 1300 Junior. The first cuttlebone series gave way in 1969 to the coda tronca version, the year when, in addition to the 1750 Veloce and 1300 Junior, following the evolution of the Giulia GT, the 2000 Veloce arrived. Between 1983 and 1989, the Alfa Romeo Spider became aerodinamica, with the adoption of a protruding bumper, a deep front spoiler painted in body color extending onto the wings like mini-skirts, and a black rubber surround encompassing the entire rear: it was available with 1. 6 or 2. 0 engines, also in Quadrifoglio Verde version and catalyzed for the American market.
In 1990, it underwent a redesign by Pininfarina, almost a return to its origins, with cleaner and more streamlined lines freed from the aerodynamic structures of the 80s: this was the last Alfa Romeo Spider.
The front and rear were redesigned, lightening the lines that became more proportionate and harmonious: the prominent rear spoiler gave way to a discreet dihedral on the trunk and the end part of the fenders, while the brand on the front logo was created on the bumper itself. The new mirrors were electric, and the taillights were designed after the style of the brand’s flagship, the 164. Under the hood was still the famous 1600 with twin 40 Weber carburetors, still produced in 2, 951 units from 1990 to 1992, but most examples featured the two-liter engine with electronic injection producing 122 horsepower, reduced to 117 HP in catalyzed versions. By the end of 1993, 18, 456 units of the Alfa Romeo Spider 2. 0 had been produced, three-quarters of which were exported to the United States.
This example was sold new in Germany on 20/ 02/ 1992 and has a complete history. It has recently been repainted in its original color and the carpets have been changed. It is equipped with a Becker radio. It is in exceptional condition for this model and has only driven a little over 100, 000 km. It comes with its service book, production sheet, and numerous invoices.
The vehicle will be delivered with an up-to-date service
