Description

Lister Jaguar ‘Knobbly’ – The Legendary ‘Boeing Car’
The Lister Jaguar ‘Knobbly’ is a machine that seamlessly blends speed, innovation, and an illustrious racing pedigree. With a history spanning six decades and a track record more impressive than most race cars, this is a rare opportunity to own an automotive icon with an extraordinary story.

Furthermore, this Lister Jaguar is fully eligible for some of the most prestigious historic racing events worldwide, including Goodwood Revival. It comes with a comprehensive set of documentation, including all historical passports, such as the FIVA passport and FIA HTP technical passport.

From British Engineering to American Power
In 1957, Brian Lister introduced his latest creation: a lightweight, aerodynamically refined race car featuring either a Jaguar XK D-Type engine or, as seen in this particular example, a high-performance Chevrolet V8 under its beautifully sculpted bodywork.

– Revolutionary design – A low-slung front end, an elongated bonnet, and an advanced de Dion rear suspension for maximum grip and balance.
– Race-ready from day one – Its debut at Snetterton in 1957 was immediately promising, securing pole position and the fastest lap. Although a clutch failure denied it victory, it proved unstoppable a month later at Oulton Park and Goodwood.
– Faster than its rivals – The Lister Jaguar outperformed the Jaguar D-Type and Aston Martin DBR1, quickly earning the title of King of the British circuits.

The ‘Boeing Car’ – A Unique Experiment
In 1959, this Lister Jaguar was delivered to Carroll Shelby Sports Cars Inc. in Texas – yes, ‘the’ Carroll Shelby. Instead of receiving a traditional Lister body, this car was outfitted with a bespoke aerodynamic design, reportedly developed in collaboration with a Boeing consultancy team. The objective? A record-breaking land speed attempt.

Key Features of the Boeing-inspired bodywork:

– High-nose front design – Optimized for airflow and minimal drag.
– Streamlined, flat side panels – A smooth exterior to reduce aerodynamic resistance.
– Extreme Kamm-tail rear end – Engineered for maximum aerodynamic efficiency.

However, this experimental configuration was never officially raced. In the early 1970s, the car was brought back from Florida to the UK and restored to its original Jaguar-powered ‘Knobbly’ configuration.

A Racing Career Filled with Victories
This Lister Jaguar Knobbly then went on to prove its capabilities on the track:

– 1978 Le Mans Retrospective – Clocked an astonishing 175 mph (282 km/ h) on the Mulsanne Straight, the fastest qualifying speed!
– 1980s & 1990s – Successfully campaigned by Bobby Bell and Eduardo Baptista.
– 2000s–2010s – Raced by Jon Minshaw, securing victories at Goodwood Revival (2014 & 2018) alongside Phil Keen.

Why Is This Lister Jaguar So Special?
– Extremely rare and historically significant – One of the most special Lister race cars ever built.
– Fully documented provenance – Complete with original photos, race results, FIVA passport, and FIA HTP technical passport.
– Race-ready and competitive – Fully prepared for Goodwood Revival and other historic racing events.
– Exceptional condition – Extensively restored and maintained by leading specialists Hall & Fowler, ensuring that the exterior, interior, and mechanical components are in outstanding shape.
– Owned by legendary figures – Including Sir Anthony Bamford (JCB), Eduardo Baptista, Jon Minshaw, and more.

A Car with a Legendary Story
This Lister Knobbly is no ordinary classic. It’s a car that set records on the Mulsanne Straight, claimed multiple Goodwood Revival victories, and remains one of the best-documented Listers in existence.
