Description

In the 1940’s a British Army specification for a light truck was issued - Something that would be British made increasing domestic spend, and a vehicle able to perform in all theatres of operation. After 30 original prototypes, the contract for production was finally awarded to the Austin Motor Company, who were to originally manufacture 15, 000 at the former aircraft factory at Cofton Hackett. The first production vehicle was completed on the 1st September 1951 and the "Truck, 1/ 4 Ton, 4×4, CT, Austin Mk. 1" (Or civilian name ‘Champ’) was born.

Manufactured between 1951 and 1956, ultimately 11, 000 examples were manufactured - But, estimates suggest only 5 remain on UK roads, and only 300 in total circulation - Making them an exceptionally rare sight. The ‘Champ’ was praised for it’s outstanding cross-country performance and saw active duty in the Aden, Cyprus, Egypt, Jordan, Kenya, Korea, Libya, Malaya, Malta, and Singapore. During these campaigns the ‘Champ’ found employment as a reconnaissance and patrol vehicle, personnel carrier, mobile radio station, ambulance, gun platform, and cargo carrier. In 1956, it was an Austin Champ that transported Sir Winston Churchill to view the 4th Queen’s Own Hussars.

This particular vehicle presents as one of the most complete, and historically significant Austin Champs on the market today, having served in Famagusta, Cyprus with the 1st Battalion Royal Leicestershire regiment, 51st infantry brigade. Following service, it was then owned and restored by the UK's leading authority on Austin Champs - Pat Ware - Author of the book 'Quarter Ton - The story of 4x4 Utility vehicles in British Military Service' where this particular vehicle also features.

Exterior

The exterior of this particular vehicle presents exceptionally well - In the correct MOD green with Green Canvas soft top which operates correctly. There is no corrosion to be noted, nor is there any damage on the vehicle at all. The vehicle still correctly displays it’s MOD plates (Road plates magnetically mount over the top of these) and most importantly, all external accessories including shovel, spare wheel, pick axe, fuel can and netting are also present and mounted.

Interior

The exceptional condition of the vehicle extends into the interior - The garnet trim is in fantastic condition with no scuffs or tears, and the rear bench seat is also present adding to the practicality. The waterproof aircraft dials are all present and correct, in good condition, as well as the rifle mounts and machete slot. The interior is an exceptional place to be present, and provides a true timewarp experience.

Mechanical

Mechanically, this particular example truly shines. The Rolls Royce 2838cc Motor starts easily, and quickly settles into idle - The engine itself is an exceptional piece of engineering, and pulls strong in all gears (Which are all gears both forwards, and backwards!). Everything operates exactly as expected and this particular Champ is a pleasure to drive. Recent invoice for newly fabricated fuel tank.

This vehicle benefits from a huge history folder, detailing letters relevant to the car, previous invoices, ownership history and many relevant guides and books.
