Introduced during 1937 for the 1938 model year were three new Flying Standard models.
One of these newcomers was a four seater, two door Drophead Coupé version of the Flying Twelve, with bodywork by Mulliner…

This is one of these beautiful examples, first registered in 1938 , and sporting the desirable waterfall front grille design, and quite rare nowadays ..

The car is presented in excellent condition throughout , and drives very well .

The Mohair hood works perfectly and is in perfect condition .

The engine starts easily, pulls well and shows excellent oil pressure.

The Standard 12 also benefits from having a 4 speed gearbox , so is capable of keeping up with modern traffic

Interior has been nicely retrimmed in leather and is also in great condition .

The front screen still opens with ease .

Tyres are BF Goodrich all round .

The car has original, working semaphore indicators , and additional flashing units for added safety .

Here is some history I discovered from a Standard Club Member ...

In 1985 my late father-in-law Peter retired and told me he was looking for a pre-War drophead car to restore/ use/ enjoy. I was hoping that I could find a pre-War drophead Flying Twelve or Fourteen (cars I have always loved) and found JT 9189 for sale in May 1985 in the pages of 'Exchange and Mart'. Sadly the car was partly dismantled and with many components missing, but Peter bought the car and we brought it back from the Basingstoke area to Dorset. However, we later discovered that the Standard had been rescued from a Dorset scrapyard by a local enthusiast, in 1972. It then changed hands, probably several times, until Peter acquired it in May 1985. He and I spent the next five years getting the car sorted, including using (as references) detail photographs and videos taken of another Flying Twelve drophead, at that time owned by friends of ours. The car was bare-metalled (it had been cream with black wings) and I resprayed it in the spring of 1990 in Peter's chosen colour scheme of cream with dark red wings. By then we had a deadline to finish the painting (with wings off etc.) and reassemble the car in time for my sister-in-law's wedding, in late July 1990. We got the car completed, running and with a fresh MoT two days before the wedding. For the next many years Peter enjoyed the Twelve and often we went on family excursions with JT 9189 in convoy with my 1938 Flying Fourteen Touring Saloon. These included several trips to Normandy with the two cars. Peter did join the Club and was a member for some time in the 1990s, and we attended the 'National' Rally in Middlesex with the Twelve and Fourteen, plus many other car events, including, each year, the Great Dorset Steam Fair. At that time the car was well known to Club members. I was very sad when, eventually, in his later years Peter decided to sell his Twelve, and I should like to have bought it but at the time had no spare garage space, so it went to a good home in Devon, where it stayed for many years. (I still have my Fourteen saloon). On the day it departed from Peter's home, to be honest I was too upset to go and see it leaving our family for the last time. I should add that Peter sold it reluctantly, only due to his advancing years.
JT 9189 is its original correct Dorset registration; it has never been re-registered.

It is good to think that this beautiful old Standard is still on the road and being enjoyed.

Thank you for reading .
