Here is your chance to own a very limited high-top version of a Volkswagen Type 2 T1 Split Screen, the ‘Snow Top’.
Converted by an American company ‘Freedom Campers’, their aim was to create a permanent solution for freestanding space within a Split Screen. The one-piece insulated fibreglass shell offered ample standing room inside the vehicle, additional interior storage, and good ventilation. The Snow Top's aerodynamic shape minimises wind resistance and adds a sleek, sporty appearance as it was described. While we cannot confirm the exact number of Snow Tops produced, our research indicates it is around 1, 000 units. The likelihood of spotting another in the UK is slim.
This German built 1966 Split Screen began its life in America, was imported to the UK in 2010, and has been cherished by three owners since its arrival. While in the UK, it has undergone extensive work, creating a complete package for your camping adventures.
The exterior has previously undergone a full respray in a white-over-cream two-tone colour scheme. It has been fitted with US-spec chrome front bumpers and truck mirrors. Furthermore, to complement its appearance, it features Creative Engineering’s polished aluminium front door frames and pop-out windows, including the front safari windows, six side windows, and rear window.
It also features its original Freedom Camper gas bottle flap, located on the driver’s side panel, along with the original Freedom Campers serial number and certification plaque of compliance for Californian motorhome regulations.
Beneath the paint lies a solid body and chassis. The overall exterior condition is great, with the exception of a few small paint blemishes and imperfections on the bodywork.
The interior has been fully refurbished throughout. All seats, door cards, and interior panels have been reupholstered in white and blue vinyl. The rear 3/ 4 bench converts into a rock and roll bed, accommodating two people. All four seats are equipped with lap belts.
There are ample storage compartments, including the original rear cabinets, the upper high-top cabinet, and two additional cabinets positioned behind the front passenger and driver’s seats.
Moving to the electronics, this Split Screen is equipped with a 95-amp leisure battery with 240V hook-up and split charging. This powers the integrated fridge, the interior lighting, a 3-pin socket, and USB charging ports.
Up front, there is a RetroSound stereo with Bluetooth compatibility, playing through speakers positioned in the two front doors and the upper cabinet in the high-top.
Mechanically, this vehicle asks for nothing. It retains its original single-port 1, 500cc engine with electronic ignition and a Vintage Speed stainless steel exhaust system. It also benefits from servo-assisted brakes with a front disc brake and caliper conversion, as well as a Creative Engineering rack and pinion steering system.
