Description
This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The February Timed Online Auction on Thursday the 27th of February. Background:
Early in 1979, Ford added a sporting element to its best selling Escort range, launching the 1600 Sport which featured a two-door bodyshell, revised gear ratios and a sporty look, using the well proven 1, 600cc Kent four-cylinder motor proving to become a highly popular vehicle, both at the time and to the present day, among fast Ford fans.
The 'One Six Double O' Sport was the best selling car in South Africa in 1980 at its retail price of R4995. The 1. 6-litre Kent engines used in the South African market were locally cast with thicker cylinder walls, producing a stronger block. So, they were a thoroughly thought out model for South African conditions.
The Car:
This lovely example of the ever-popular Mk2 Escort 1600 Sport has spent most of its life in South Africa and is finished in Cress Green with a chocolate cloth interior and features period correct factory Sport decals and spotlights.
Built at Ford’s Halewood plant in 1980 using the last of the heavy duty two-door RS shells, this 1600 Sport was then shipped to South Africa.
The car retains its original 1600cc Kent engine, with a list of parts being changed on the car recently including an engine oil change, new plugs, oil and filters. The gearbox oil has also been changed to make the car fully ready for its new custodian.
The car has been used sparingly, only being driven on dry and fine days. It is fitted with four Pirelli Cinturato tyres, with another full sized spare. The car is MOT and tax-exempt, so is ready to be used by any classic car or Ford enthusiast.
