We are delighted to present for sale this 1972 Series 3, which was supplied locally to our premises back in 1972. It is extremely uncommon for us to get a vehicle which such incredible patina – only a handful of times in the last 20 years of trading have we ever seen this.

We purchased this vehicle from an elderly lady who had purchased it from the original owner in 2008 – she sold it to us due to the fact advanced age was not allowing her to drive it anymore, and the fact that she knew we would see it re-homed to a loving household. Often, when one sees vehicles sold online as ‘Patina’ cars – this often means bodywork damage, rust and paint which has been refinished often several times from new.

As the photos show, that isn’t the case with this Series 3 – words fail us to how incredible this really is in the flesh – the sun faded bonnet, the original galvanised unpainted cappings, the original ‘lettered’ front numberplate, rear grab handles, rear mud flaps, tow bar with electrics, the wing top mirrors – all as it has been since she purchased the vehicle – and according to the gent she bought it off of – this is how it always was. One can tell the roof has not been repainted – the dead giveaway being the rain gulleys on the roof piece – normally the galvanising has been covered up by layers of repaint – not the case here. It is an incredible piece of history and when one parks up in the Market Square – people rush to talk to you about it! The bodywork is amazing – completely unmolested and original.

The story on the inside is much the same – all we’ve done in here is add some floor mats to protect them and keep them clean – the seats are exactly as we purchased it, and the rear is unfitted with the spare wheel mounted in the correct position on the bulkhead – mainly because the original owner didn’t want one on the bonnet, as he did not want the extra weight on it for when he was lifting it to check his oils and levels! Looking at items like the dash which often suffer from sun cracking, peeling and foam damage – seeing one like this which has never been recovered is just amazing.

Out on the road, this Series 3 takes you back to 1972 – with cross climate tyres fitted for the best on and off road compromise. It is a joy to take out for a spin – both thanks to the admiring glances and thanks to the period driving experience. The previous keeper spent whatever was necessary to keep this one in the best possible condition, and this is reflected behind the wheel. The original gearbox has been reconditioned to give it another 50 years of life – often the Achilles heel of the Series 3. A New Clutch has also been fitted, to ensure it does not need to come out again any time soon. The engine is a joy to drive and feels smooth and pulls well to speed.

We are often asked by customers to source them ‘Patina’ Series vehicles, but often people don’t appreciate how truly rare to find something like this is (which is not a mock up) with few keepers & original local supply. Normally, when one finds something which fits the bill – they’re often too far gone – rusty, tired, or with bits missing – not the case here – and so this is a real opportunity for the discerning buyer who wants something very special.

This unusual Series 3 has been prepared to the same standards of all of our stock vehicles so it is all up together, fully warranted and ready to be driven and enjoyed and marvelled at down at your local pub. If however you would prefer the vehicle to sport a retail “shiny” finish, we can give you a very reasonable and fixed quote for that work.
