EQUIPMENT
Alpine White paintwork, Grey leather / Quattro velour upholstery, 15-inch Speedline alloy wheels, 5-speed manual transmission, Electric windows, Original Clarion cassette radio, Digital clock, Front and rear disc brakes, Lockable glove compartment, GTI floor mats, Spare wheel, Jack, Spare key.
EXTERIOR
Fresh from a full check over, service, and timing belt change at the current mileage of only 53k, this lovely 1. 9 GTI is ready to be driven and enjoyed. And, as a Phase 1. 5 model with no sunroof or power steering, it’s also the most collectable specification. The Alpine White paintwork is generally very sharp and other than some minor imperfections the body remains in good solid condition. The underside is also notably tidy. Filling the arches are the original 15-inch Speedline alloys, all un-kerbed and shod in premium Michelin tyres.
INTERIOR
With the exception of some light surface wear to the original leather seat bolsters, the interior is very impressive. The switchgear still looks fresh, and commonly worn items such as the steering wheel and gear knob show few signs of use. The carpets are also in great shape with none of the usual fading issues, and they’re protected in the footwells by good quality GTI overmats. At the rear of the car the seats are very tidy, and the parcel shelf is free from damage having never been fitted with any aftermarket speakers. The original Clarion cassette radio is pleasingly still fitted and of course it works perfectly.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
Under the bonnet is clean and original with no signs of accident damage. At 32k miles the engine was stripped, and the valve stem oil seals were replaced; a new clutch was also fitted at this time. The car has been regularly exercised and maintained ever since, and most recently it was serviced and MOT’d by our trusted classic car specialist in January 2025 at 53, 731 miles. For additional peace of mind this work also included replacement of the timing belt and water pump. Driving the car back from the workshop it felt just as tight and together as it would have done back in 1989.
HISTORY FILE
This lovely 1. 9 GTI was first registered in September 1989. The accompanying History File is complete with the original Peugeot/ Talbot document wallet with all handbooks, the original stamped service booklet, and even instructions for the Clarion tape deck. There are plenty of old MOT certificates and a raft of maintenance invoices dating right back to 1990 further verifying the car’s low mileage of only 53k. All in all, a very smart but usable low mileage example in sought-after non-sunroof, non-PAS, and non-cat specification.
