The F355 Berlinetta debuted in the spring of 1994, followed by the Targa GTS and Spider variants in 1995. While it shared almost identical dimensions with its predecessor, the 348, the F355 was virtually a new car. Its sleek, flowing coachwork was shaped by countless hours of wind tunnel testing, incorporating an F1-inspired flat underbody with channelled airflow that generated substantial downforce, effectively counteracting lift at high speeds.
At the heart of the F355 was its phenomenal 3. 5-litre V8 engine. The name "F355" reflects this engine's key features: a 3. 5-litre capacity and five valves per cylinder—highlighted by the Cinquevalvole inscription on the rocker covers. This remarkable unit produced a claimed 370 bhp at 8, 250 rpm, with 268 lb-ft of torque available between 5, 000 and 6, 500 rpm. The engine featured advanced materials, including titanium alloy con-rods and a magnesium alloy clutch housing, while Bilstein shock absorbers with electronic sensors provided active damping. A six-speed manual gearbox, mounted transversely behind the longitudinally placed engine, ensured the perfect spread of ratios to keep the engine in its sweet spot. Later, a Formula 1-derived six-speed automated manual transmission was introduced, quickly becoming a popular choice.
Despite its formidable performance, the F355 was far from being just a 'racer on the road.' It was a thoroughly modern car that balanced razor-sharp handling with everyday usability. This was achieved through state-of-the-art technology, including computer-controlled variable damping, proportional power-assisted steering, a light-action clutch, and even a driver's airbag to enhance safety and comfort.
