The Land Rover Defender - A true timeless classic, universally loved for its timeless style, rugged design and versatility. A vehicle that was in continuous production for 67 years, and over 2 Million Units were made! But there is one Defender that all enthusiasts aspire too, the ultimate, original Defender - The 50th Anniversary.
In 1998, to celebrate Land Rover’s 50th birthday, the Defender ‘50th Anniversary’ was built in Solihull. Available in very limited numbers (385 for the UK market, with what looks to be less than 150 left registered on UK Roads), it featured a 4. 0-litre V8 petrol engine and was the only Defender to be fitted with a factory automatic transmission (Outside the USA). UK vehicles were painted in the stunning Atlantis blue, and a roll-over protection cage designed by industry leaders ‘Safety Devices’ offered improved protection, stability and aesthetics to the unique car.
This particular low number (38) and low mileage (46, 500) example takes one of the rarest and most exclusive of Defenders, and turns it up to 11. Over the last 7 years, it has been meticulously restored by a local specialist in an effort to be the ultimate ‘50th Anniversary’, and therefore the ultimate Defender! Firstly, the chassis is now Galvanised and powder coated, offering a longevity not available in it’s counterparts. This treatment extends to the safety devices roll bar too - Areas that were usually susceptible to wear are now protected. Trims were refreshed, along with the paintwork to finish up this restoration which now makes this one of the few (If any others!) 50th Anniversary Defenders that can be used and enjoyed by the true enthusiast.
Exterior
One of the most beautiful features of the car, and one that makes it instantly recognisable as a ‘50th Anniversary’ is the paintwork - The beautiful ‘Atlantis Blue’ flip paint is in fantastic condition throughout, with no signs of wear due to it’s limited use since restoration. All efforts were made to maintain the originality of the vehicle and it features the original chrome side steps and bull bars, as well as spot lights, as it did the day it rolled out of Solihull. The wheels are in fantastic condition with no signs of kerbing or damage, and underneath the vehicle is as clean as it is above. In an effort to protect the car moving forward the bulkhead and door frames are also galvanised, addressing what was a weak spot in the orginal car, and preventing future corrosion and wear.
Interior
The interior is as clean as the exterior, and it’s difficult to believe that this is now a 27 year old car! On the inside originality has been prioritised again, and the original grey interior is clean and tear free, and all interior features are present and operational. The numbered plaque within the centre console is also present.
Mechanical
Mechanically, the car runs and drives exactly as expected - The V8 is beautifully responsive, and pulls strong through the automatic transmission which shifts as expected. The noise is fantastic and really compliments what is one of the most exotic off road vehicles available! Axles have been restored, along with suspension components which, like the chassis and roll bar, have been galvanised and powder coated ensuring longevity.
