Description
By the mid-1980’s, it was becoming clear that the beloved R107 series was in need of a replacement. The 1970’s steel-and-chrome styling was replaced with an innovative, angular design featuring multiple suspension, steering and drivetrain improvements, along a myriad of creature comforts. The result was the R129 series, the most advanced and luxurious SL to date. Its timeless styling, capable performance, and superior engineering made it an icon of the 1990’s and a universal symbol of success.
From 1991 to 1997, the V8-powered 500SL/ SL500 was equipped with the robust M119 engine, used by Mercedes-Benz in Le Mans, but later updated to a more modern unit, the M113. In addition to four different six-cylinder engines, the R129 was also offered with a 6-litre V12 (M120), made famous by being the power-plant of choice in the Pagani Zonda. A myriad of special and limited editions were made, including the Mille Milgia Edition (1995) and the 2002-only ‘Silver Arrow’ edition, a commemorative farewell to the model’s ten-year run.
This particular example was built in December 1995 and delivered new the next month in Florida, USA, where it stayed until 2018. Still under 10, 000 miles at the time, its second owner continued to service the car and drive it sparingly, until we purchased it in late 2024. The car comes with full manuals, stereo test tape, first aid kit, spare key, and spare tyre. A powerful and refined cruiser, this 1996 SL500 still has the venerable M119 ‘Le Mans’ engine and is ready to drive and enjoy.
