Description
At the Paris Salon in October 1964, Ferrari unveiled the replacement for the 250 GT platform. Powered by a 3. 3-liter development of the long-running “Colombo” short-block V12 engine, the 275 GTB was clothed in Pininfarina-designed and Scaglietti-built coachwork that bore more than a passing resemblance to the celebrated 250 GTO. The model was the first Ferrari road car to feature independent rear suspension and a five-speed transaxle, as well as the GTB (Grand Touring Berlinetta) nomenclature that remains in use today.
In early 1966 a second series was unveiled that featured a longer nose; a modification intended to aid aerodynamic downforce at high speeds. A more modern torque-tube was also fitted between the engine and transaxle to help reduced drive-line noise and vibration. The rear window was enlarged to improve visibility. To improve luggage space, the fuel filler, fuel tanks and spare tyre were relocated, and the rear boot hinges were changed from internal to externally mounted.
A total of 442 275 GTB road cars were produced between autumn 1964 and summer 1966, including 236 Series I "short-nose" and 206 Series II "long-nose" cars
Among the options and features offered for the 275 GTB, one of the most sought-after by collectors is the six-carburettor induction system, which added some 25-brake horsepower to the 275 GTB's already healthy 280 brake horsepower output. From 5, 000 to the engine's 7, 600rpm power peak, the sound and fury of the six Weber carburettors is as sublime as its performance.
This left-hand drive example that we are pleased to offer for sale was delivered new in July 1966 via Luigi Chinetti Motors of New York, USA. It was specified from new in Grigio Argento over Pelle Nera leather and features the uprated six-carburettor induction system.
It was imported to the United Kingdom around 10 years ago and between 2019 - 2021 treated to a full ground up restoration with Joe Macari Classics. This included a bare metal respray in a stunning dark metallic Grey, whilst the interior was fully retrimmed in Pelle Rossa leather. The engine, gearbox and running gear were completely overhauled and all exterior brightwork was refinished. The car has covered just over 1, 000 miles since the works were completed and as such presents extremely well.
It is accompanied by a large selection of photographs detailing the restoration process and has since been awarded Classiche Certification from the Ferrari factory confirming its matching numbers engine & gearbox. The car has been recently serviced and is ready to be enjoyed.
If there is one Ferrari to own within the span of the marque's first quarter-century it is the 275 GTB. Blistering performance, quick, responsive handling, ideal weight distribution and the aggressive Pininfarina designed Scaglietti coachwork, with elements of the legendary 250 GTO, make it a milestone.
