Description

This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at Race Retro 2025 - Competition Cars on Saturday the 22nd of February, Stoneleigh Park, Stoneleigh Rd, Coventry, CV8 2LG. According to its accompanying Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this smart, original right-hand drive 911T was completed on 1st February 1972, finished in Silver Metallic (8080) with a black leatherette/ dogtooth inserts interior and optioned with sport seats, rear wiper and tinted windows before being despatched to Porsche Cars GB and subsequently UK-registered as PGC 689K.

For 1972, in addition to the larger engine, the 'E-series’ cars had a further two revisions. An aggressive new front spoiler was incorporated below the bumper and in an attempt to move as much weight as possible towards the centre of the car, the oil tank was re-positioned inboard of the right rear wheel arch, resulting in the introduction of an external oil filler cap on the right-hand side rear wing behind a flap (Oel Klappe). The propensity for petrol station attendants to fill the oil tank with fuel and the resulting warranty claims quickly persuaded Porsche to change the design and 1972 'Oel Klappe' cars became difficult to sell, possibly resulting in their comparative scarcity today. As is often the case, that rarity has resulted in the 'Oel Klappe' cars now being the most desirable.

David Lees, one of the previous keepers of the T, successfully raced a 911E for Parr Motorsport (47 KOC) and some time later was looking for another one and that search resulted in PGC 689K, then a road car, being selected. It was subsequently built up to race-spec and he continued racing this car successfully for Parr Motorsport with many wins and a significant second place in a big grid at the 1989 Porsche Club GB Party. David Lees duly retired and Parrs rebuilt the car for Rupert Bullock (there is a detailed invoice for £23, 000 in the file) who very quickly passed it on to Liam Dowling over in Ireland who again had great success with PGC (lots of further detail in the file). During his ownership, the legendary Bob Watson was commissioned to rebuild the engine to 2. 7-litre RSR-spec (over £20, 000 in the 1990s!) and running mechanical fuel-injection, the Dyno report in the file indicates an impressive output of just over 250bhp; very competitive in 911 club racing.

Our vendor purchased the car from us at Race Retro in February 2023 and during his ownership invested further in this smart 911. There is an invoice in the file for work carried out by an Independent Porsche Specialist completed in May 2024 for a total of £3, 809. 76 and that work included a major service, new spark plugs, oil filter, fuel filter, fresh brake fluid, replace the rocker covers and fit a Stormski short-shift gear selector and precise coupler. He has taken the car to a few events but it has not been raced.

The nicely bound history file contains dozens of photographs of the car at various circuits/ events throughout the period, lots of invoices for parts and works completed (both in this ownership and before), correspondence and a fairly comprehensive list of previous keepers, and its  Competition Log Book from September 2000.

This is a fast, early UK right-hand drive 911 in a super colour, on the button with a powerful RSR-spec engine, great handling and in the right hands, will continue to be competitive for years to come. As a non-sunroof, side oil-fill car with competition history it might be worth thinking about returning the car to original spec and pursuing FIA status, however, it appears attractively estimated, considering its specification and provenance and we welcome and encourage you to come along to Race Retro and have a look for yourself.
