Description

This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at Race Retro 2025 - Competition Cars on Saturday the 22nd of February, Stoneleigh Park, Stoneleigh Rd, Coventry, CV8 2LG. As the 1960s roared on, so too did the introduction of a new generation of powerful, big-block V8 saloon cars in the US that came to be known as 'Muscle Cars'. Ford claimed bragging rights with its dramatic new Mustang, destined to become one of the all time greats, whilst other 'Motor City' favourites included the Dodge Charger, Pontiac GTO, Plymouth Barracuda and the Chevrolet Camaro. Introduced in 1966, the Camaro was offered in two-door form with both coupe and convertible body styles to choose from, as well as a range of different engine sizes and trim and styling packages. Top of the pile at Chevrolet was the macho Z28 powered by a rumbling 302cu. in 5-litre small-block V8 and this was their chosen contender for the battles that lay ahead.
The Astro Blue 1970 Camaro Z28 on offer here was built up as a full race car to compete in the Anglo American Challenge during 1997-2001 driven by our late vendor, Jim Graham. It was part of a group of 24 cars that were shipped to Sebring to take part in a series of Invitation Races and we understand, behaved really well and finished every race. There are a couple of information sheets with the car but it’s not clear how much racing the car did after 2001.
We understand that it was fitted with a new Richmond gearbox in 2001 with around 2-hours running-time since and a new diff (4. 11) in 2002 and not raced since. In the summer of 2003, it was treated to a fully rebuilt Chevrolet 350ci unit that generated around 440bhp. A detailed engine specification sheet is in the history file but, in summary, it featured a 4-bolt main block, Dart II sportsman heads, steel nitrided crank, ‘H-beam’ rods, flat-top pistons, competition bearings, billet timing set, competition cams, aluminium roller-rockers, Edelbrock manifold, Holley 750cm carburettor, electronic ignition, an Accusump and much more. A brand new full race clutch and new flywheel assembly were also fitted in 2003.
The car has been started and run on a regular basis up until a few years ago but we don’t believe it’s been used in anger since 2003, although after a 'tidy up' it made an appearance at Shelsley Classic Nostalgia in 2019. It wouldn’t start on the day of our visit (low battery/ old fuel) but should we succeed, there will be a Saleroom Notice on the day.
Undoubtedly in need of a cosmetic refresh but, should reasonable expense be being considered, we understand that the car could be converted to FIA specification at relatively little cost. Food for thought.
