‘The current Alfa Romeo conceals as beautiful a chassis as ever with four-wheel independent suspension and a six-cylinder twin overhead camshaft un-supercharged engine….‘ – The Autocar, 11/ 07/ 1947.

Among the most beautifully constructed automobiles ever conceived, the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 occupies a cherished position in the history of coachbuilding and automotive excellence.

Produced from 1939 and after the war until 1951, the 6C 2500 was the last of the famous six cylinder cars first started with the 1928 6C 1500.

The top model was the Super Sport (SS) which had the shortest wheelbase for nimble handling and a triple carburettor engine capable of 110 bhp.

The best known and most prolific coachbuilder for Alfa Romeo during this period was Carrozzeria Touring, with the coachbuilder’s signature lightweight Superleggera construction technique of welding an aluminum body to a small-diameter tube-frame.

The late Thirties saw substantial evolution in automobile body aerodynamics and Touring of Milan was a leader.

It was able to develop its designs in its own wind tunnel and tried a number of approaches.

Under the hood resided a 110-hp dual overhead camshaft 2, 443-cc inline six-cylinder engine with chain-driven camshafts and hemispherical combustion chambers.

The engine breathed courtesy of three side-draft Weber carburetors.

Drum brakes were fitted at all four wheels.

A four-speed synchromesh transmission was operated via a steering column-mounted shift lever in line with the fashion of the day.

Total production of the 6C 2500 Super Sport was 458 units, of which 75 were built between 1939-1943 and 383 between 1947-1951.

Of the coupé coachwork styled by Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera of Milan, approximately 120 II Series examples were produced.

ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE

According to factory records, this exquisite example was delivered to Carrozzeria Touring on 09 November 1948.

Over the next months the Milanese coachbuilder clothed the car in a stunning second series Superleggera body, with the completed car leaving the busy workshops on Via Ludovico di Breme on 3 February 1949.

It was tastefully finished in an attractive Grey Metallic over a finely detailed interior trimmed in Dark Brown leather.

The car was delivered to its first owner, Dr. Antonio Mario Savino, in Buenos Aires.

Dr. Savino was the Argentinian Minister of Industry and Trade and the Alfa remained in Argentina the following years in the hands of three subsequent owners.

In 1988, it was exported to Italy and acquired by its first Italian owner, Mr. Bruno Torazzi of Cavriana, Mantova.

In its Italian homeland, as the car retained its original alloy bodywork, engine, and gearbox, he began a restoration in 1992 but then it remained in storage and unfinished until 2004.

Mr. Torazzi then sent the Alfa Romeo to the renowned Alfa Romeo restorer Carrozzeria Nova Rinascente di Cognolato, near Padova, who took two years to return the car to concours condition.

By taking a look at the website of the restoration company it is clear that this company belongs to the top of the restoration world.

Cars like a Ferrari Monza, a Ferrari 250 TDF, a Ferrari 275 GTB, an Alfa TZ, an Alfa 6C 1750 Zagato and many many more have been restored and some of them have won prices at the biggest concours in the world such as Villa D’Este and Pebble Beach.

Autofficina Omega took care of all the matching mechanical components, restoring them to a high standard.

Subsequently, the Alfa Romeo was sold to a Dutch collector in 2008 who registered it in the Netherlands on March 4th.

In 2016, the Alfa was acquired by a new owner who sold it in 2019 via RM Auction at Villa Erba on Lake Como.

The former owner, a Dutch collector, purchased the 6C and participated in the 2020 and 2021 Mille Miglia.

After the 2021 Mille Miglia he invested over € 150. 000,- in additional restorative attention to the coachwork and mechanical elements and a new interior was installed in 2022.

In the history file, invoices are available as well as a number of pictures showing the car competing at the Mille Miglia.
