Introduced in December 1991 for the following model year, the eighth generation of Chevrolet’s iconic Suburban SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) was the most luxurious yet. Available in ‘C’ (2WD) or ‘K’ (4WD) guises and with ½-ton (1500 series) or ¾-ton (2500 series) ratings, it boasted more creature comforts than ever before not to mention independent front suspension and flush fitting glass. Initially available with a choice of ‘small block’ 5. 7 litre or ‘big block’ 7. 4 litre petrol V8s, a 6. 5 litre V8 turbodiesel joined the range for 1994. Rated at 215bhp / 440lbft of torque, the latter was allied to 4L80 four-speed automatic transmission. Reliable and unstressed, the ‘derv’ engine was also by far the most fuel efficient. Synonymous with the 1990s, the eighth generation Suburban proved popular with families and celebrities alike.
Built in Janesville, Wisconsin during June 1996, chassis 1GNGK16F6TJ418384 was supplied new by Bauer Millett of Manchester (an authorised GM dealer). A four-wheel drive, ½-ton, 6. 5-litre turbodiesel model in top of the range ‘LT’ trim, the accompanying diesel supplement owner’s manual shows maintenance by Baur Millett and Reg Vardy. Thereafter, it was entrusted to a number of specialists including West Midland American Vehicles Ltd. Treated to a new gearbox, power steering pump and injector pump, ‘P585 JNE’ was also fitted with an uprated turbocharger and PCM prior to entering the current ownership in 2014. Joining a collection of American vehicles, the Chevrolet was augmented with a ‘lift kit’, Hummer wheels and custom paintjob. A talking point at car shows and a boon when wild camping, the seven-seater has seen less use of late (hence the reason for sale). Staring readily and running well during our recent photography session, the Suburban is understood to have covered circa 178, 000km from new (c. 111, 000 miles). Imposing, characterful and individual, it is offered for sale with V5C registration Document, owner’s manuals, fresh MOT certificate and history file.
