The Yamaha YZF-R1, or simply R1, is a 998cc sports motorcycle made by Yamaha. The R1 was launched in 1998 after redesigning the Genesis engine to create a more compact engine by raising the gearbox input shaft and allowing the gearbox output shaft to be placed beneath it. This "stacked gearbox" was followed by other manufacturers. Compacting the engine made it much shorter, allowing the wheelbase to be shortened as well and the centre of gravity to be optimized. The swingarm could be made longer without compromising the overall wheelbase, which was a short 1, 385 mm (54. 5 in). Four 40 mm Keihin CV carburettors fed fuel to the engine.
The R1 was also equipped with a 41 mm KYB upside-down front fork and 300 mm semi-floating disc brakes. The instrument panel was electronic, with a self-diagnosis system and digital speed readout. The exhaust used Yamaha's Exhaust Ultimate Power Valve (EXUP) system, which controlled exhaust gas flow to maximize engine power production at all revs, resulting in a high-power and high-torque engine.
The bike has been kindly provided to us by the vendor who has owned it for a couple of years and has had a number of R1s over the years. When it was new, the supplying dealer had four R1s commissioned by Dream Machine in Wayne Rainey racing livery. The vendor had the paintwork totally re-painted in October 2023 including having the wheels powder coated and it is totally unmarked. It has an aftermarket exhaust with removable baffle, wavey discs, Gilles rearsets and a colour matched seat cowl. The vendor has also supplied the original discs, exhaust and footrests, plus a Simpson crash helmet that has been painted to match the bike. It comes supplied with V5, 3 keys, owner’s manual and a large file of paperwork. Viewing is highly recommended to fully appreciate the quality of this bike.
