‘F42SOR’ is a nice example of the top selling Golf GTi Cabriolet. Despite hailing from 1989, a full six years into the Golf MKII’s reign, ‘F42SOR’ is based on the niche defining MKI Golf of 1974 with a MKII Cabriolet never being developed. ‘F42SOR’ was acquired by its vendor in September 2023 when he became the GTi’s eighth keeper. MOT records reveal that ‘F42SOR’ has been very lightly used since 2011 with only 1, 831 miles separating 2011’s MOT from the current advisory free test dating from 16th January 2025. Offered with a partial service history, 2 keys, spare wheel, jack and tools, ‘F42SOR’ may well represent the best value way to become a proud MKI GTi owner in 2025.
‘F42SOR’ is a scarce example of what VW connoisseurs sometimes refer to as a “triple white” Cabriolet. So called due to offering the holy trinity of white hood, interior and wheels. ‘F42SOR’ also exhibits the post 1988 facelifted attributes of bigger moulded bumpers with integrated front and rear spoilers, chunkier wheelarch extensions and side skirts – sometimes referred to as “the Clipper Kit.” Sitting on an original set of white and diamond cut Scala or “snowflake” alloy wheels, ‘F42SOR’ offers all the bells and whistles most sought after by GTi purists. This even extends to the white checked seat upholstery and accompanying white door cards and side panels. Key amongst ‘F42SOR’s’ highly desirable attributes, of course, is the 1781cc fuel injected four cylinder, 112bhp power unit. In original trim this delivered a 110mph top speed and a 9 second 0-60 mph time. As for condition, the vendor reports that all aspects of ‘F42SOR’ are at least “good” with the transmission and electrics warranting an “excellent” rating.
As early as 1976, just 2 years after the car’s launch, Karmann were showing Volkswagen their Golf Cabriolet concept. With Karmann having been so instrumental in the success of the Beetle Cabriolet, this was a natural progression. The Golf Cabriolet was finally launched in 1979 and was immediately made available with the 1. 6 litre fuel injected unit from the Golf GTi, then badged as the GLi. By 1984 the range topping Cabriolet, by now with 1. 8 litre power earned the prestigious “GTi” nomenclature. Ultimately 388, 552 Mk1 Cabriolets of all types would be built, outselling the open-topped Beetle and, in 1991, setting a record for being the world’s best-selling convertible.
In summary:
· A scarce example of the desirable “triple white” Golf Cabriolet
· Presenting in range topping 1. 8 litre GTi form
· Complete with a long, advisory free MOT until January 2026
