The Ariel Square Four was launched in 1931 to almost universal acclaim and would soon become affectionately known as “the squariel.” ‘GFM396,’ is an impressive example of the later 4G , 995cc model introduced in 1937. ‘GFM396’ arrives from enthusiastic, long term ownership of around 14 years. This squariel arrived with the current owner fresh from a reported engine rebuild and the addition of Morego oil pump and an electric ignition to improve both durability and usability. ‘GFM396’ is offered with some older MOT copies as well as its V5 Registration Document. Classified as an Historic Vehicle, ‘GFM396’ is zero rated for road tax and MOT exempt. Offered with NO RESERVE, this is an excellent opportunity to own what was described by a road tester at launch as “easily the finest motorcycle for general purposes I have ever ridden.”

The 1000cc Square Four is a fine looking beast with all the attributes so desired by classic British motorcycle enthusiasts. These include the twin, under sprung saddles, the low mounted, straight through exhausts and the chromed and painted “teardrop” petrol tank. Other charming features include the tank top instrumentation, the stylised front mudguard topped with curved number plate, and the café racer style grip mounted mirror. The vendor reports all mechanical aspects of ‘GFM396’ as “excellent” with all the overall aesthetic condition judged as “good.”

The Square Four was so notable, initially, for its innovative engine. Designed by Edward Turner, who would go on to create the Triumph Thunderbird and Bonneville, it was effectively two vertical twin-cylinder units linked by gears. Despite riding beautifully, the early versions were prone to overheating the rear two cylinders. The 4G model of 1937 ushered in a complete redesign and an increase to 995cc as a result. A shade over 4, 000 4G models were produced between 1937 and 1948 making it the most popular of the five iterations of Ariel Square Fours.

In summary:

· A great looking example of the esteemed and advanced Ariel Square Four

· Presented in the most durable, 1000cc 4G forms

· Complete with an earlier engine rebuild and some thoughtful mechanical upgrades
