‘G606UUW’ hails from 1989, and an example of the so called “new” Turbo R which was updated in 1996 with Zytek fuel injection and some visual enhancements. The “R” stands for roadholding with a raft of suspension upgrades vastly improving the big car’s dynamics. With just 1, 366 “new” Turbo Rs ever produced this was always a highly exclusive car and many times more so with the passing of over 25 years. With a modest 97, 473 miles covered to date in the hands of just five keepers, this represents a Bentley with a very solid provenance. Currently offered without an MOT, ‘G606UUW’s’ last advisory free test expired in June 2024. ‘G606UUW’ is reported to come with its original book pack as well as a collection of previous MOTs and invoices.
‘G606UUW’ presents in a very regal looking dark green livery with a gold, hand painted double coach line running the full length of the car. The big quad headlamps, body coloured radiator shroud and original turbine style cast aluminium wheels combine to make ‘G606UUW’ a hard to ignore luxury conveyance. Some paint bubbling is noted around the base of the boot lid badges. The sublime and luxurious cabin is finished in magnolia hides and exhibits Bentley’s more sporting, deeply bolstered seats and differentiated centre console treatment. In order to live up to that “R” for “roadholding” nomenclature the specification took the suspension of the Mulsanne Turbo, but the anti-roll bar was stiffened by 100% at the front and 60% at the rear, the dampers were slightly stiffened, the rear subframe anchored laterally and the steering made slightly heavier. By the 1987 model year the 6750 cc V8 engine was producing 328 bhp. The vendor rates all aspects of ‘G606UUW’ as “excellent.”
The Bentley Turbo R was a key model in Bentley’s onward journey of marque differentiation, significantly marking the end of the “rebadged Rolls Royce” days. The enhanced roadholding, dynamics and performance of the Turbo R emphatically started to re-build Bentley’s reputation as a rejuvenated luxury sporting brand.
