In 1987, the Esprit was restyled by British designer Peter Stevens, who would later go on to design the McLaren F1. He designed a less angular, more rounded Esprit, with Giugiaro apparently endorsing the new shape and why wouldn’t they, it is stunning in every way. The exterior changes were accompanied by a redesign of the interior that gave more space to the occupants. The revised Esprit was not given a new "Series" number but is often called by its project code of X180. Panels for the body were produced using a new process called VARI (Vacuum Assisted Resin Injection). This method, which was patented by Lotus, offered advantages over the previous hand lay-up process. Kevlar reinforcement was added to the roof and sides for roll-over protection. This also increased the Esprit's torsional rigidity by 22%.
We are very pleased to offer this Lotus to the market, just in time for the show season and the forthcoming summer.
Finished in red with black leather interior, this example looks great. Offering a turbo charged 2174cc engine with a 5-speed gearbox, this car offers the Lotus experience in a car evoking all the glamour of the Roger Moore 'Bond' movie cars or even your inner Richard Gere from “Pretty Woman”, the choice is yours.
The Lotus comes with its original owner’s handbook, which contains several stamps up to 58, 000 miles, plus other assorted bills and invoices back to 2005 for parts purchased and work undertaken over the years. It is accompanied by a collection of old MOTs, the most recent to August 2025. The Lotus would also appear to have a Tracker fitted - although we are not sure if this is still live. Matching Bridgestone tyres feature all round.
We were very fortunate to sell this Lotus in our September 2024 Auction to a lovely gentleman who did, and still does, love it. However, he has broken his ankle badly and has had to have it pinned and fused, and therefore cannot get in or out, let alone drive it. After a great deal of pondering and heart ache, he has succumbed to the fact that he cannot keep it. This is a very reluctant and genuine sale, and we wish Arthur well in his recovery and hope that the new owner never meets him, as it will probably break his heart to see it again. We are grateful that he chose us to sell the Lotus for him, as he knows we do love a Lotus… who wouldn’t?
