Interesting back story

We are delighted to bring to sale this archetypal 60s classic British open sports car – a Jaguar E Type DHC in red with red leather interior and chrome wire wheels.

Showing just shy of 12k miles, it appears that the Jaguar has been around the clock looking at previous MOT certificates, although it appears in very sound condition overall.

There are some blemishes to the paint and some evidence of rust, particularly at the base of the passenger door. The exterior chrome work is tarnished and pitted. The interior is a little tired and the seats would benefit from a leather feed. The convertible roof appears in decent condition, if a little creased, and the Perspex rear window is a little cloudy. In addition, we understand the clutch needs attention and the brakes.

This particular example has a very interesting back story in that the car was subject to a DVLA / police enquiry in the 1990s. It appears that the same registration plate of ALB 4G was attributed to 2 similar Jaguar E Types when new – with one example being exported and the other (this one) staying in the UK. The issue only came to light when the deceased vendor tried to register the car in his name following purchase in March 1996. The fact he was a QC helped him navigate through the issue – with the net result that DVLA agreed to issue new registration (rather than a Q plate) and chassis number to the car to create its own new identity in 1997. The chain of paperwork is present in the file to explain the sequence of events. A new chassis tag was stamped with the new number given to the car by DVLA, and placed over the ‘old’ tag.

Notwithstanding this, the identity problem was nearly 30 years ago (hence the 1997 date of registration in the V5) and the last letter on file from DVLA dated 15/ 7/ 96 would appear to draw a line under the matter. It should also be noted that the HPI report for the car is clear.

We have the Heritage Certificate for the Jaguar (all be it under its previous registration number) plus bills for parts bought over the last 30 years or so. The V5 is present plus previous MOT certificates, Jaguar World engine overhaul book plus a useful E Type General Notes printout. There is a box of spares in the car, plus some additional spares in the boot.

The owner of the Jaguar has unfortunately passed away, hence the reason for sale and it offers a fantastic opportunity to purchase an unabused E Type DHC that requires some restoration at a sensible price.
