1933 MG L-type Magna
During September 1931, a new addition to the MG range appeared in the form of the Magna F Series. At this time small six-cylinder engines were becoming popular, in the quest for smooth running. The new Magna, which was available as a two-seater, or a four-seat tourer, was also available as a small fixed head coupe, known as a Salonette. The 1. 3 litre engine was effectively the same as that of the Wolseley Hornet, slightly disguised by the Abingdon Works.
In the Spring of 1933, an improved version of the Magna was introduced, now designated ‘L‘ Type, which shared the shorter stroke engine with stronger crankshaft as used in the ‘K’ Series Magnette. This engine had a capacity of 1087cc, therefore slotting neatly into the 1100cc class for competition. With a new crossflow cylinder head, this engine gave a welcome power increase over the previous ‘F’ Type. This was thanks to a 12 port crossflow cylinder head and a further welcome improvement were the 12-inch brakes.
With its long bonnet, sloping radiator and flowing front wings, the ‘L’ Type Magna certainly looked the part and was also available with the choice of coachwork styles as previously offered. Being capable of 75 mph, these cars were to prove very popular on both road and track, as well as in reliability trials.
This car, chassis number L0849, was completed on 21st June 1933 as an ‘L1’ four-seater, finished in grey and supplied by MG dealers P J Evans of Birmingham on 3rd August that year.
There is a buff RF60 logbook dating back to 1950, plus history of ownership and notes on restoration etc. It is thought the car was rebodied in the present two seat format at the time of the restoration around 25/ 30 years ago.
In the present ownership for the past ten years, the MG has covered 8, 000 miles and proved most enjoyable and reliable, having been very carefully maintained. More recently the gearbox has been rebuilt and the water pump renewed. Work has also been carried out on the electrics including the fitment of a cooling fan.
A delight to drive, this six-cylinder MG from the Company’s great days is ready and eager for new adventures. Full weather equipment is supplied, this being in keeping with the car’s overall excellent condition. She has a most pleasing livery of maroon over red, with red leather interior.
Whilst in the current ownership the car has proved enjoyable and reliable and runs with very good oil pressure feeling taut and very responsive on the road.
The car retains her original Birmingham registration and presents an opportunity to acquire one of these desirable 6-cylinder MGs at a realistic sum.
Additional photos will be added (these were taken as she arrived in the rain). A video will also be updated shortly.
