When the cover was pulled back on a brand-new Porsche model at the 1963 Frankfurt International Motor Show, few could have predicted the huge impact it would have on motoring in the decades to come. Full production of the car began a year later in September 1964 at the Porsche factory in Zuffenhausen. Two years after the original coupé's introduction, a convertible 911 - the 'Targa', named in honour of Porsche's numerous victories in the Sicilian classic - arrived in 1966. Expected US safety legislation had prompted an ingenious approach to the soft-top 911, the Targa sporting a hefty roll-over bar to protect the occupants in the event of an inversion, together with removable roof and rear hood sections, which were stowed in the boot. For 1969 a quieter and less leak-prone fixed rear window replaced the less than perfect rear hood.
Delivered new in the USA and imported into Holland in 1993, this 911S Targa has formed part of the vendor's private collection since 1997. The 'S' is the more powerful and sought after version. It was delivered with the optional Hella fog lamps, Blaupunkt radio, and rear screen heater, and still has its original Recaro seats. It is believed that the car was restored some years ago, hence the good condition it is in. The car is offered with an old US title; US owner's manual; old invoices; one spare key; and a current Dutch title.
