The Aston Martin V8 survived the changes of ownership and financial upheavals of the 1970s, appearing in countless variants, one of the more exclusive being the Volante convertible. Introduced in response to customers' demands for such a car, the latter first appeared in June 1978. Arguably the ultimate in soft-top luxury, the newcomer boasted a lined, power-operated hood which, when erected, endowed the walnut embellished interior with all the solidity and refinement associated with the saloon version. Although its open-car aerodynamics meant that top speed suffered with the hood down, the Volante's 140mph maximum nevertheless ranked it among the world's fastest convertibles. Mechanically the Volante followed the equivalent V8 or Vantage saloon of the period, and in 1986 benefited from the re-introduction of fuel injection along with its closed cousin. Maximum power, which had dropped somewhat over the years, was restored to 309 ch in this final, Series 5 version. V8 Volante chassis numbers ran from 15001 to 15849, a total of 849 cars.
Completed and finally inspected on 11 December 1987, Vantage Volante #15624 was delivered new to the USA through Aston Martin Lagonda of Beverly Hills on 8 May 1988. It was originally equipped with an automatic transmission, finished in Cannock Black with a Tan interior.
Currently registered in Monaco, the car displays less than 19, 000 km on its five-digit odometer and has recently undergone an extensive restoration by Aston Martin. Presented by its current owner as matching numbers, it is reported to be driving and shifting well. This V8 Vantage Volante comes with a photocopy of its Aston Martin Record Card.
