With the introduction of the Giulietta in 1954, Alfa Romeo established the principle of "small car, big performance," which would guide the marque's production for years to come. The renowned twin-cam four-cylinder engine was employed in its 1290cc form but featured an aluminium block. In 1957, the sedan, coupé, and spider versions were joined by the pinnacle of the range, the Sprint Speciale. Built on a shorter wheelbase than the Sprint, the Sprint Speciale was elegantly bodied by Bertone in a highly aerodynamic design. With a claimed output of 100 horsepower, the Giulietta SS could approach speeds of 200 kilometres per hour. After 1, 366 Giulietta SS models had been produced, a 1600cc version delivering 112 horsepower was introduced in 1963: the Giulia SS. Only 1, 399 examples of this version were produced until 1965.
Registered in 1965, this example, which shows 592 kilometres on the odometerlikely since its restorationwas acquired in France by its current owner in 2014.
