According to the Alpine Register, chassis number '17808' left the factory in 1972, finished in arguably the best and most defining colour, Bleu Alpine Métallisé. It is noted that it was prepared to Group 3 specification before being exported to Italy where it was campaigned in numerous races carrying various number plates (at that time the registration changed with each change of province).
It is recorded in various Estratti Cronologici (ownership histories) that the first owner was a Mr Aligi Pellicci from Florence, who was followed by Bruno Bocconi of Parma; Giancarlo Moretti of Milan; Claudio Antonini of Foligno near Perugia; Romolo Falcinelli of Cannara near Perugia; and Gaetano Affetti, first of Como and then Modena. Since September 1979 the car has been registered in Modena with the same number plate.
Most of the aforementioned owners raced the car; too extensive to mention here, its race history highlights include not fewer than nine 1st-in-class results with the first owner in 1972: Bormio-Stelvio; Coppa Alpe Nevegal; and Coppa del Chianti. The Alpine was raced every year until 1978 when, although five years old, it still finished 2nd in Group 3 at the Magione circuit. Most results are documented in the Italian motor sport magazine Autosprint (see press cuttings on file). In later years the car was used for Historic regularity events, as an ACI/ CSAI Fiche from 1989 bears testament. The Alpine was also subject of a lengthy article in an Italian magazine.
The car has been subject to at least two restorations: one of the engine pre-2000, as evidenced by notes of the work done still listed in Italian lira; and a second more exhaustive restoration which included overhauling the engine, gearbox, interior, carburettors, body, brakes, steering. etc.
This work is reported to have been done at the end of 2011 by Fabio Tarquini's workshop in the province of Ascoli Piceno, and is evidenced by a handwritten list detailing the restoration. At that time the colour was changed from yellow back to its original colour of Bleu Alpine Métallisé. Although the roll bar was retained, the car has mostly been returned to road configuration.
Still presenting beautifully on a recent photo shoot and performing as it should, this is a truly stunning example of the Alpine 1600 S, finished in arguably the best colour combination available and with the added benefit of known ownership, early racing history, and a beautiful restoration. The car is offered with Italian registration papers and the aforementioned historical documentation.
