The first truly new Porsche 911 since the model’s inception in 1963, the 996-series upset quite a few marque traditionalists when it was launched thirty-four years later. Although, lighter, faster, more aerodynamic and better handling than the outgoing 993-series, the newcomer was pilloried for its ‘fried egg’ headlights (shared with the entry level Boxster), re-designed interior and water-cooled 3. 4 litre engine. A response to ever-tightening emissions regulations, the latter developed 300bhp and 258lbft of torque (making it considerably more potent than its air-cooled 3. 6 litre predecessor) and was allied to manual or automatic transmission. Introduced for the 2002 model year, the second generation 996 (a. k. a the 996. 2) sported 911-specific headlights which were only shared with the Turbo model together with re-profiled front and rear bumpers. Inside, it gained such niceties as fold out cupholders and a glovebox. The engine grew to 3. 6 litres with its increased 320bhp / 273lbft outputs prompting the Tiptronic variants to be fitted with a stronger Mercedes-Benz 722. 6 automatic transmission (utilised by several AMG models). The 996. 2 was able to boast a stiffer bodyshell too, to the benefit of handling / roadholding. Available in Coupe, Targa and Convertible guises, all were capable of daily use but boasted near 180mph top speeds.

Finished in the handsome combination of Silver with Red leather upholstery, chassis WP0ZZZ99Z3S608699 is understood to have covered a mere 40, 000 miles from new. A rear-wheel drive 996. 2 model fitted with the larger engine and stronger Mercedes-Benz Tiptronic transmission, it further boasts a sunroof and slightly later 997-series alloy wheels. The MOT history corroborates the notably low mileage, while a HPi check includes the following note: 'Category N Insurance Loss. No Structural Damage and Repairable - Insurer Decided Not to Repair.' Given the price of certain Porsche parts, it would have been surprisingly easy to ‘write off’ the 911 back in July 2018 when the marker was issued. Little used of late, the 2+2-seater passed its most recent MOT test on 17th January 2025 at an indicated 40, 240 miles with ‘no advisories’. A landmark model in 911 evolution, interest in the 996-series grows year on year. Needless to say, ‘LF53 ONO’ would carry a considerably higher guide price were it not for its 2018 misadventure. Offered for sale with V5C Registration Document and MOT history.
