Description

This is the first truly decent Alfetta GTV we have been asked to sell, and consequently the only one we have offered, since AJM Classics opened it’s doors over 3 years ago. These early GTV’s, fitted with the legendary Alfa Romeo twin cam in this case in the largest 2. 0 form, are arguably the prettiest with the beautiful shape complemented by the stainless steel brightwork and delicate chin spoilers.

This particular example has somehow escaped being ravaged by rust throughout the body as most early Alfettas are afflicted, having required what seems to have been only a light restoration to outer lower panels and inner wings. Likely this was due to having one careful owner from 1989 until 2017. Further testament to how she has been kept is the incredible condition of the fragile interior trim in this example, usually looking very faded and thread bare with the early cloth trim fitted, but here showing little wear, aside from the drivers seat piping, and no discolouration or thinning. A new set of carpets were fitted during the rebuild which has helped here too.

The restorative work was carried out by the last owner between January 2019 and December 2020.

During the rebuild the following body work was carried out:

1. Removal of engine and ancillary components from engine bay.
2. Inner wing repair panels welded in place.
3. New right hand outer sill.
4. All four wing bottoms replaced with correct repair panels.
5. Complete repaint in the original Robinia Metallizatto AR534 (metallic Ruby Red) paint.
6. New boot seal, window channels seals etc.
7. New front & rear screen rubbers.

Once the body was completed attention was turned to the mechanics, with various work completed including:

Engine strip down and rebuilt including polishing the crankshaft, balancing the complete bottom end assembly, new piston rings, full new gasket and oil seal set, top & bottom timing chains, new main and big end bearings (std) among other less significant items.

1. New water pump.
2. Various new hoses.
3. Carburettor rebuild.
4. 123 electronic distributor & Flamethrower coil.
5. Suspension rebuilt with all new ball joints, ride height reset on the torsion bars, lowered uprated rear springs.
6. Caster arm ball joint conversion.
7. Alfa 75 3. 0 front anti-roll bar.
8. Koni Sport adjustable shock absorbers all around.
9. Prop shaft rebuild.
10. New heater valve.
11. New MOMO Vega alloy wheels & new tyres.

As can be seen the list of work carried out was extensive and has produced a lovely looking and superb driving GTV. Following completion of the project the owner decided to sell in order to fund his next Alfa restoration.

In 2020 a good friend purchased the car with the intention of using and further improving her. During the current ownership she has had the following work completed:

1. Dinitrol anti rust protection to the under body.
2. Several oil/ filter services.
3. Cylinder head removal and rebuild to rectify a sticking cam follower, as it was removed the whole head was stripped, new valve seals fitted and a light skim carried out before reassembly with new gaskets.
4. Gearbox rebuild by Alex Jupe Motorsport with new inner & outer synchromesh rings on 1st to 4th inclusive.

In November 2021 the car was used for a group test cover feature in Practical Classics magazine, of copy of which is in the history file.

This must now rate as one of the nicest driving early Alfetta GTV’s in the UK, it really is a treat. She has completed many long runs over the past summer, including Bicester Heritage, Brooklands and more local running around for fun.

It is so rare to find a good early GTV now and this one ticks just about every box and is ready and raring to go for 2025.

Although now exempt she will be supplied with a full 12 Months MOT from point of sale for the new owners peace of mind. A large A4 ring bound history file accompanies the car, documenting works carried out right back to 1984. Old MOT’s date back to 1986.
