We are delighted to present for sale this early Series 2 (not a 2a), finished in the rarely seen Limestone configuration with Sand Canvas and Limestone Wheels. This vehicle was sold to us locally from just out towards the coast at Scarborough and it is rare for us to find genuine, early Series 2 models on dateless registrations with three numbers and three letters – particularly ones which can seat the whole family & with a spec like this (read on below).
Externally, this has all the features we’d hope a Series 2 enthusiast would want to see – the front and rear lamp guards, the bonnet mounted spare with sand canvas cover, wing-top mounted mirrors with chrome stalks, vintage number plates, original 600×16 sized wheels and tyres, rear grab handles, etc etc. It is pleasing to note that early Series 2 features still exist too – those eagle eyed customers will notice the square valance by the front grill rather than the later rounded type, for example. A recent sand canvas completes the look and we think the photos speak for themselves – this really is a handsome truck which we enjoyed seeing the reflection of in the shop windows of our test route!
On the inside, there are three standard front seats, along with deluxe matting to the footwells. Rear bench seats are fitted, meaning seating for seven people including the driver. A load mat is fitted to the rear floor to protect against dirt and scratches. It is great to note some original (and expensive) options are fitted here too – the heater with front de-mist which will prove handy on colder mornings and even a passenger wiper… which was an optional extra at this time too! On the subject of the wipers, modern uprated individual twin wiper motors are fitted which work really well… unlike the originals which tend to just move the water on the screen around slowly, rather than actually clearing it! Again, more of these early features of a Series 2 can be seen – the horn on the stalk to the RHS of the driver rather than on the wheel and the twist to open vents, as an example. Putting all this together means you have a Series which can take the whole family out on trips no matter the weather conditions that you face, with the warmth of a heater and with wipers which means it can be used in the rain too… quite the combination.
Out on the road is where this early Series 2 really shines though – a Weber Carburettor is paired with a Stainless Steel exhaust to give the maximum power available in the standard period set up, along with an infectious exhaust tone which encourages you to ‘crack on’ when out and about. Free wheeling hubs prevent diff wind up and axle wear, whilst also giving the best possible fuel economy by disengaging the front prop shaft when it is not needed. 600×16 tyres (the original size fitted when new at the factory) mean light steering when compared to later, larger fitments and nippy acceleration to road speeds too thanks to shorter gearing…. the other added benefit is when off-roading, smaller tyres like this do not ‘dig in’ and instead skip on top of the mud – meaning they are much more capable off-road than one may think they are, despite having a road biased tread.
In summary then, if you are looking for an early, tax and MOT exempt Land Rover® which can carry the whole family in as much period-relevant comfort as possible, then this could be for you. With the rarely seen colour scheme, mechanical upgrades over standard and the benefit of a heater for the winter ahead – this is surely worth considering for any Land Rover® fan, either a novice or those experienced in the marque.
