History
For around 40 years, Renault has been a dominant force in the world of hot hatches. From the razor-sharp handling of the modern RS Méganes to the Clio Williams, Clio V6 & of course the very iconic Renault 5 GT Turbo, with most of them earning instant icon status as a hot hatch heavyweight, Renault knows how to make enthusiasts take notice. But the roots of this legacy trace back to the 1980s, when the game-changing 5 GT Turbo burst onto the scene & set the standard for what a hot hatch could be.
Built in Renault’s famous Dieppe factory in Northen France in 1986 & delivered by Normans of Melksham, this example has been well looked after it’s whole life.
Accompanying this GT Turbo is an impressive history file including the original sales invoice from November 1986.
The service book has been stamped every 3000 miles, in accordance with Renaults Turbo maintenance schedule up to 45, 000 miles.
Full servicing has also been carried out with invoices & the service book being stamped at:
5665 miles – 26/ 03/ 1987

19, 875 – 11/ 08/ 1988
23, 678 – 21/ 04/ 1989
30-450 – 17/ 10/ 1989
31, 342 – 03/ 12/ 1989
40, 800 – 02/ 04/ 1991
45, 146 – 27/ 02/ 1992
This Renault 5 Turbo was taken off the road in 1995 and securely stored. It was fully recommissioned as part of the refresh in 2022 to the condition that it’s in today.
Body & Paintwork
The bodywork on this Renault 5 is in great condition, having benefitted from an exterior re paint & various trims being replaced. The Rouge paintwork presents very well.
As you can see from the pictures this car would look at home at any classic car show.
All trims, badges & lights are in good order, still sitting on the original, fully refurbished alloy wheels with Yokohama tyres, the car presents extremely well throughout.
A truly gorgeous example of a very rare car.
Interior & Trim
A fantastically Retro interior, which immediately puts a smile on your face when you enter the car.
All gauges and dials work as they should do, lights and electric windows operate perfectly.
The seats are in good condition with the material still tight & bolsters in good condition other than a small sign of wear on the drivers bolster, which was common on these car even when only a few years old due to the thin nature of the materials used.
The are a couple of marks of the seat back on the driver seat which can be seen in the pictures.
Drivers’ door card has a small amount of wear, as pictured, but is very minor indeed, and does not detract from the interior condition at all.
The carpets are in very good condition with rubber mats fitted to ensure they stay this way.
A superbly retro place to be, full of nostalgia.
Engine
Back in the ’90s and early 2000s, the GT Turbo was a star of the modifying scene. Affordable, thrilling, and ridiculously easy to tune, it became a playground for enthusiasts pushing boundaries.
Unfortunately, this did mean many were past the point of ‘no return’, also many were stolen & written off, making a clean, original example an incredibly rare find today.
But get behind the wheel of this example, & it’s clear the hunt was worth it.
With a sharp chassis and that unmistakable turbocharged surge kicking in at 2500rpm, it’s a pure hit of ’80s nostalgia on four wheels.
This example runs beautifully, the engine bay has been cleaned but is all original, even down to the factory stickers on the strut tops
The engine pulls nicely throughout the entire rev range, and the car does not smoke, either on start up, idle, on boost, or on overrun.
The car boosts just as it should do & is a fantastic car to drive.
A very well looked after car mechanically, & it shows when driving the vehicle
Running Gear
Having benefitted from an underside refresh when the light restoration was completed, this GT Turbo is in good condition underneath.
The gearbox is a pleasure to use, the suspension is smooth and without any unwanted noises. A very comfortable, yet sporty drive.
The brakes are superb for a car of this era, all wheels are without any damage & all have premium Yokohama tyres fitted which have hardly any wear to them at all.
