Description
If you are looking for an original Giulia Super then this is the perfect car and in the perfect specification – Alfa rosso red with black interior, right hand drive and 1600cc. It has never been completely restored and retains great originality while being maintained ready for use. It also has an incredible history file.
Supplied new in May 1971 to Maxwell & Sons Ltd, who owned a successful chain of record shops in South London and Surrey, initially for the use of William Maxwell, and then by 1975 his son Richard, who was to keep this car until 2021.
Richard Maxwell was meticulous and from 1982 kept a log of every journey he made in the car, right up to his last in February 2020. The log shows everything from a list of Alfa Club events and journeys around the south east of England to visits to various Alfa specialists for work on the car and also the odd entry entitled “long overdue run” and the less descriptive “around”! It paints a picture of car that went from daily driver to classic and corroborates the total mileage, which today is 106, 000 miles.
Over the years work was done to the Alfa as and when necessary and there are receipts for paintwork and mechanical repairs, including a cylinder head overhaul, but the car was never restored, just maintained correctly.
The history file also includes a record of its ‘15 minutes of fame’, when in the early 1990s it was borrowed by Alfa GB to help promote the new 155 saloon. The advertising campaign brochure, entitled ‘Origin of the Species’ is included, showing photos of the car in billboard advertising around London. Ironically, a note from Richard admits that it was only a static exhibit as the cylinder head had been removed for work at that time!
Also included are all the registration documents, from the original green logbook to the first V5 and then V5C. The ownerships changes between father and son are pre-computerisation and therefore even today, the V5C only records one previous owner.
Sadly, Richard Maxwell passed away in 2020 and the car came up for sale in early 2021. The advert attracted one of our oldest Maserati clients, who has also owned a number of Alfas over the years, including in his youth a Giulia Super. We inspected the car for him and he subsequently bought it, with the idea of summer road use and the odd mildly competitive outing. We then carried out a round of work to improve the car mechanically and electrically, resulting in an investment of over 125 hours. This work included in-depth servicing, engine mountings, carburettor overhaul, front suspension and steering box overhaul, new brake discs and pads throughout, new radiator and hoses, wheel refurbishment and a set of the new Pirelli Cinturatos that were OE spec for this car.
A year later we serviced the car and undertook some minor repairs and then in winter 2023, we tackled some areas of deterioration in the body, including bubbling on the base of the front wings and rear wheelarches. This resulted in painting most of the car (apart from the roof) and returned it to good health bodily.
Total investment by the current owner in this car since purchase is approximately £30, 000 and it has been used sparingly during the summer months. In 2024 however, it was also transported to Italy and took part in the Vernasca Silver Flag hillclimb, a non-competitive but fantastic old car event.
It is only being offered for sale now to make way for another exciting Italian classic and is available to view at McGrath Maserati.
