Description
As post-war America’s economy boomed, so did its automotive industry. By the 1960s the big three, Ford, Dodge and GM were producing cars in almost every shape and size. But for Chevrolet, they had captured the hearts and minds of Americans with the Impala.
Launched originally in 1958, Impala production intermittently ran right up until 2020. It’s indisputable, however, that the sweet spot was in the earlier years. The cars built in the late 1950s captured our Barber-shop quartet imagination, while we can’t help but dream of cruising down the street in our six-four.
By the mid-to-late 1960s, Chevy had the recipe nailed, with Coke Bottle styling and powerful V8 engines. The Impala became a symbol of the American dream, of freedom on the open road.
This example is a 1967 Chevrolet Impala Coupe 327 Auto, produced in the GM Assembly Division in South Gate, Los Angeles, California. It was subsequently sold new by Holiday Chevrolet in San Francisco, which we know in part thanks to the original dealer licence plate surrounds.
Externally, the car remains in its original specification however in 2010 the car was subjected to a full bare metal respray in its original shade of Nantucket Blue - the paint was carefully colour matched to an untouched section of paint on the inside of the boot lid.
The paint is in very good shape, no doubt thanks to its careful owners who have kept the car in dry storage since its arrival on the UK’s shores. The car’s brightwork, badging and trims are all in very good condition and are complimented by the rally wheels, though standard hub caps are included.
The interior is finished largely in black vinyl, which is all in excellent condition with no signs of wear or damage. The dashboard is free from any cracks and the instrument cluster shows just 71, 250 miles, with only 7, 500 miles being covered in the last 17 years.
Under the bonnet, you’re met with 327ci or roughly 5. 4-litre small-block V8, it produces around 275bhp and 355 lbs-ft of torque. The engine benefits from “camel-hump” heads, a cylinder head often sought out by drag-racers as some of the best castings to leave the Chevy foundries.
The big V8 is mated to a GM-Turbo Hydramatic - 3-speed column shift automatic. These cars are not designed for manual transmissions, they’re best suited to these reliable smooth autos. The engine runs and sounds great, thanks to a full custom-made stainless steel exhaust that was made by North American Motor Company in Camberley back in 2020.
The car was imported into the UK in 2008. Since it arrived in the UK, it has had just two owners - the car has been with its current custodian for ten years. Throughout its time in the UK, it has been consistently maintained to a high standard. Including being regularly MOT’d despite no longer requiring one. Its most recent service took place in July of 2024.
If you’re looking to live out even just a slice of your American dream, this Impala could be the car for you. Whilst an Impala might not be a common sight on UK roads, they are far more common in the US. That means that there is an enormous community of enthusiasts and businesses ready to support you throughout your ownership journey. There might not be a better option for a bit of classic American Muscle…
