The Ford Escort RS1600i is a true homologation-special model, built to meet Group A regulations. Its legacy is intertwined with Ford’s performance history, showcasing the engineering prowess of the newly formed Special Vehicle Engineering (SVE) department. From the outset, ‘RS’ has stood for ‘Rally Sport,’ and since its inception in 1971, the RS badge has adorned some of Ford’s most iconic performance models.
A Performance Pioneer
The RS1600i was derived from the XR3 but featured advanced engineering upgrades that set it apart. With its fuel-injected 1. 6-litre CVH engine, higher compression ratio, hotter camshaft, solid tappets, larger exhaust system, and twin-coil ignition, it delivered impressive performance. Paired with a five-speed gearbox with lower gearing for enhanced acceleration, it offered an exhilarating driving experience. The uprated suspension, reduced ride height, KONI shock absorbers, and 6Jx15" alloy wheels contributed to its superior handling, making it a formidable rival to the Golf GTI at launch.
The RS1600i wasn’t just a performance car; it was an exclusive one. Limited production numbers and its availability through Rallye Sport dealers only make it a rare and highly sought-after collector’s item today.
An Unrestored Gem
This particular RS1600i is an unrestored, factory-original example and one of just 2, 600 UK models. Even more remarkable, it is one of only 560 finished in Sunburst Red (Code P1). It boasts uniform paintwork across every factory-fitted and date-stamped panel, complete with the desirable “orange peel” texture unique to original Ford paint. All decals are intact and original. A few minor, sympathetically touched-in chips are barely noticeable.
The RS cast alloy wheels remain unrestored with minor blemishes, the original manufacturer-spec Dunlop SP Sport Super D4 195/ 50 VR15 tyres are included in the spares. These period tyres exhibit massive tread depth and show no signs of cracking.
Immaculate Interior
The Shark Grey Crushed Velour interior (Code TC) remains in exceptional condition. The iconic RS seats with deep side bolsters have retained their structural integrity, and the matching door cards, perforated headlining, dashboard and deep grey carpets are pristine And all equipment is fully functional, including the fuel thrust cut-off warning lights.
Documented Provenance
Originally purchased new by Mr. R. Bentley from Ford Rallye Sport Dealer Kirbys (Wrexham) Ltd, this RS1600i was first registered on 11 August 1983. Mr. Bentley’s fastidious care is reflected in the comprehensive documentation he maintained, including every Service record, Invoice, Original bill of sale as well as all communication letters received from Ford. His meticulous attention to detail ensured the car remained in exceptional condition until 2009, when it was passed on to its second owner, Mr. Jackson, a dedicated RS enthusiast. Mr. Jackson continued to meticulously add to the car’s extensive history file, preserving its legacy up until 2024 when purchased by ourselves.
