This remarkable 1953 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith Sedanca de Ville represents the pinnacle of bespoke luxury, with coachwork by the esteemed Hooper & Co., carriage makers to Queen Victoria and King Edward VII. Built on the long-wheelbase chassis and powered by the smooth 4. 5-litre straight-six engine introduced in 1952, this Silver Wraith stands as one of only 639 produced and is celebrated for its timeless elegance.

Commissioned by the flamboyant Armenian-British tycoon Nubar Gulbenkian, a man renowned for his eccentric style and love of bespoke Rolls-Royces, this car reflects his unique taste. It is one of only four Silver Wraiths Gulbenkian commissioned from Hooper, and its “Empress Line” coachwork is widely regarded as a masterpiece of post-war design, even earning a feature in Rolls-Royce: The Classic Elegance by Lawrence Dalton (page 109).

The ingenious Sedanca de Ville configuration allows the chauffeur’s roof to slide effortlessly into a concealed compartment, creating an open-air driving experience. The front compartment is trimmed in grey leather, while the rear passenger area offers supreme comfort with large, reclining seats upholstered in West of England cloth, electric windows, air conditioning, and a powered glass division. Adding to its opulence, the dashboard, door fillets, and window frames are trimmed in exotic python snakeskin, a signature detail of Gulbenkian’s commissions. A speedometer and time clock are mounted in the rear division, reflecting Gulbenkian’s penchant for practical yet distinctive luxuries.

This exceptional Silver Wraith later became part of the private collection of the late James Crickmay, where it was cherished and regularly used for family occasions, Rolls-Royce rallies, and prestigious events. It was also loaned to Lord March for the Goodwood Revival, where it chauffeured VIP guests between the circuit and Goodwood House.

Lovingly maintained and expertly prepared by Rolls-Royce specialists Frank Dale & Stepsons, its impeccable provenance, unique features, and extraordinary design make it a rare and highly desirable example of Rolls-Royce’s post-war craftsmanship.
