Description
2008 Unique Morgan Aero 8 GT3 prototype project.
In the mid-2000’s a plan was hatched for the iconic Morgan Motor Company to licence the development of their advanced aluminium bonded chassis, BMW V8 powered Aero 8 for FIA GT3 racing. The highly regarded French racing team Auto GT was selected, run by Ex Formula 1 driver/ engineer Jean Pierre Jabouille with funding provided by Eric Sturdza of Barings Bank Suisse.
The Aero 8 provided an excellent basis for a competitive GT3 car; front engine rear wheel drive with a 50/ 50 weight distribution, double wishbone suspension at each corner, in board rocker at front, very strong but light weight construction and homologated at just over 1000Kg’s only meant that an essentially standard BMW M5 V8 could provide ample power and torque to comply with the power to weight regulations. When coupled to an ultra-reliable Hollinger 6 speed sequential gearbox driving a BTR differential, a very competitive package emerged.
Our car, acquired from the factory for our customer Roger Whiteside, was the first to be built and enjoyed a number of competitive top ten finished in 2008 in his first year. Two of its sister cars were converted into Aero Supersports for the 2009 season and won multiple FIA GT3 races in 2009, notably beating the much-vaunted new Audi R8 on its debut at Silverstone.
The car was damaged during an off at a very wet Britcar qualifying session at Silverstone some years ago having been rebuilt by us. With the recent re introduction of Motor Racing Legends Historic GT3w series, at the first of which Roger’s Aero Supersport set seme very competitive times.
This is a highly worthwhile project and a chance to stand out from the crowd with a car with the potential to win and preserve a piece of Morgan history.
