The Appeal
Land Rover’s Discovery is one of the most capable SUVs, known worldwide for its reliability and luxury. This first-generation example has been well-maintained with a significant service history, rust repairs, and only light off-road modifications. It’s an unmodified early Discovery, making it a sought-after collectible.
History and Paperwork
The previous owner used it daily for several years before storing it in a friend’s farm, where most of the damage occurred, likely due to leaking twin sunroofs. The interior was damaged, with holes in the floors and a wet appearance. However, the interior was original and worth saving. We carefully removed and professionally cleaned and dried it out. The welding was done by GA Welding in Wigan, a company we’ve used before and trust.
Now it’s your turn to add to this car’s history.
The Interior
* - Saggy headliner replaced
* - Great interior quality
In the 1990s, SUV interiors were basic, but the Discovery’s was revolutionary. Designed as an accessory, it offered creature comforts rare in large 4x4s.
The large and comfortable seats offer a commanding view, though they’ve deteriorated over time but have been repaired. The light grey carpet underneath the rubber mats stands well, though some areas may not be entirely new due to the truck’s age.
As with Solihull products, the infamous saggy headliner is a common issue, caused by the loss of glue over time.
One notable feature of early Discovery models is the abundance of windows, including side windows, the iconic Alpine windows at the boot section, and twin sunroofs. These windows flood the interior with light, making it feel more spacious.
Despite the high mileage of nearly 135, 000, the interior is well-preserved, with only a few minor wear and tear. From the driver’s seat, you can create lasting memories on this great example.
* The exterior is finished in Coniston green and features a facelift variant. The wheels are in good condition, powder-coated.
When the Discovery launched in 1989, its eye-catching design influenced its younger brother, the Discovery has three doors, similar to the first-generation Range Rover. Known for their collectibility, three-door Land Rovers are more sought after than their five-door counterparts.
Underneath, some older Land Rovers may have holes, but the underside of this Discovery appears clean and solid. Photos of the underside are provided for reference.
Presented in original, unmodified condition, this Discovery 1 is a perfect blank canvas for any modifications. Its three-door design may enhance its desirability.
The mechanics include a refined 300 Tdi engine, a smooth automatic ZF gearbox, well-service, extensive paperwork, and completed welding.
For enthusiasts of large turbo diesels, this Discovery 1 is an excellent choice. Under the hood, you’ll find the much-loved 2. 5l turbo diesel engine, providing ample torque.
While it may seem a bit agricultural at first, this Discovery is capable of any task. Compared to modern cars, it may feel sluggish, but once adapted to its driving style, it’s a comfortable ride. A ‘boost pin’ is included with the sale for those seeking additional power.
This Discovery 1 is well-maintained, with a thoroughly stamped service book and recent MOT and tire replacements. Its exterior and interior condition are impressive, and its original, unmodified drivetrain is a unique feature.
SUMMARY
This Discovery 1 is a rare find with a clean interior, 3-door configuration, and unmodified drivetrain. It’s likely one of the best 4x4s available, especially since Solihull 3-door products are more sought after.
