Description
The Porsche 911 has enjoyed enduring success since production began in 1964, thanks to its blend of performance, engineering quality and clean styling. It has been developed into numerous different variants and racked up countless victories in rallying and circuit racing.
Development was rapid during the 1960s. In 1967 came the 160bhp 911S, the base-model 110bhp 911T and the limited-run, competition-spec 911R. The wheelbase was extended in 1969 as a way of taming the on-the-limit handling, and the 911E was also introduced that year as a ‘mid-point’ in the range, sitting between the 911T and the more powerful 911S.
One of the most coveted variants of all is the Carrera RS 2. 7. Introduced in 1972, this landmark model was first 911 to feature both ‘Carrera’ and ‘RS’ – for ‘Renn Sport’ – in its name, and it was also the first to wear the distinctive ‘ducktail’ rear spoiler. Built for motorsport homologation, it was available in both M471 Lightweight and M472 Touring specification, and 1580 were built through 1972 and 1973.
The 911 being offered for sale here started life as a 1972 911E, but has been painstakingly modified to Carrera RS 2. 7 specification and subsequently prepared for road and competition use. It is not a retrospective evocation of the famous model, but a correct period 911E with continuous history that has been upgraded over the years to full RS M471 characteristics.
By the turn of the millennium, the car was beginning to show its age, so an extensive rebuild was carried out. It features a correct-specification 2. 7-litre engine with magnesium crankcases and direct fuel injection, plus the later aluminium rear trailing arms, stiffer torsion bars, and larger-diameter anti-roll bars. In addition, the transmission is equipped with a limited slip differential.
The set-up includes Bilstein dampers and a tarmac-specification rake and ride height. Under the front bonnet, there is a Porsche 80-litre fuel tank and spacesaver spare wheel and tyre. Other enhancements include towing bracket, aluminium tank bash guard, suspension adjuster protective skids, and a period aluminium roll bar. Inside, the correct-size steering wheel sits ahead of the fibreglass seats with the screw adjusters.
The flat-six engine was last dyno’d by Bob Watson at over 210bhp, and the overall weight of 970kg mean that performance is spectacular.
The current owner has had the car for 34 years, and has used it extensively in that time. An extremely experienced competitor who raced single-seaters and at Le Mans, he not only regularly drove the 911 on his commute from the Cotswolds to London, he has used it for sprint events and more than 30 rallies – two of which he won outright. Outings have ranged from the Rallye des Pyrénées and Carrera Clasico to the Classic Mountain Challenge and Cape to Cape Grand Tour.
During his time with the 911, it has been fastidiously maintained by specialists such as CS Engineering, Francis Tuthill’s Workshop, Nick Prowse Motorsport and Bob Watson. The engine has had three rebuilds in its life and the gearbox has also had three renovations, the last including what Tuthills call the ‘Teddy Bear’ brace. A new factory front wiring front harness has been installed, along with an upgraded fuse box.
Poor health has meant that the Porsche has been used sparingly in the past year, but it’s offered for sale absolutely ‘ready to go’ and with a history file that includes grade ‘A’ FIVA papers. Fitted with Luke harnesses, a handheld fire extinguisher and a Halda trip meter.
This is a quick, well-sorted and fully compliant car that would be competitive easily on a wide range of events on offer from Rally the Globe, Bespoke Rallies, Hero, and very many more.
The car is currently residing with Rally Preparation Services sister Company, RPS Storage Ltd and available for inspection.
